So I go to Starbucks....
to get a tall hot chocolate for lunch.. I had a late breakfast and wasn't very hungry...
So I hand the guy a $10 bill. He writes on it with some pen, and hands it back to me telling me it's fake. 
I was like, "Are you kidding me?!" he's like, "no, this is a special pen and when you write on money, if it's real, it draws clear, if its fake, it draws brown or green. But don't worry, I'm sure you can use it somewhere else"
First of all, Where did I get a counterfeit $10 bill?!
Second of all, my luck, i'll use it in another store and get arrested!
Third of all, should I really keep this fake in circulation?
He did hand me a grande hot chocolate though when I paid for a tall...

fake bills are more prevalant than you think.
you *should* go to a bank and turn it in, but if you dont feel like being out of 10 bucks, i doubt someone in a supermarket would notic.e.

See, when I owned a store, we had a special counterfeit (sp?) pen and it would turn brown or a yellowy brown if the bill was REAL.
He might have been confused! But at least you got a freebee!!

Yeah, I've never had one.. or at least.. I didn't think I did, maybe I have and never knew it.... 
I felt like a bank robber...

you know, I think you are right! I was a bank telller, and I think thats they way the pens were - if the bill is fake it would be a light yellow, if it was real it would turn dark

That's what I thought - that it was real if the mark turned brown/yellow-brown.

you might be right, i dont remember - but those pens arent 100% anyway.

take the bill and rub it on paper witih a little force, if the ink comes off on the paper than the bill is real. I learned that at a Lenox outlet years ago

A DARK BROWN OR BLACK MARK MEANS THAT THE BILL IS SUSPECT
A GOLD OR YELLOW MARK MEANS THAT IT IS GOOD.

When I worked in a store, we would use the pen/marker and also hold the bill to the light..Look for a serial number going down the side. If there is a serial number, than it's real.

I think it all depends what kind of pen you have. When I was a teller it would turn a color (black, brown, green) if it was fake or stay clear if real.
I know when people would have money that they wanted deposited and it was fake we would have to fill out a form that gets sent to the government. THere is some type of tax credit or something along that line that they would receive in the mail eventually. This doesn't seem worth if for 10$ but this was important for businesses where they could sometimes have a few hundred in fakes.

yup i still do that. and i also have a machine that runs the bill thru and if the green light comes on its good, if the red light comes on its counterfeit.
with regard to the pen, i think the kid was wrong about the color.

those pens aren't 100% accurate.
I had a really good customer give me a bill that came up as fake. My store was next to a bank, so I walked it over to the bank and they told me that bill was real!!!

When I used to work at a store, there also used to be a certain year...around the 50's where the green looked a little off...like it was counterfit. Why the hell would he check a 10 dollar bill?

In the span of 1 month I took not one, but 2 counterfit $100s to the bank. I guess someone was passing them off in the bar where I woked. I went out and got one of those pens aince my boss didn't seem to care.
