SO GROSS!
I was just talking to my husband & he is working on this womans house. He is totally skeeved. He said you can't even get in to the front door. There is garbage everywhere. He thinks she is a horder/pack rat. She has about 20 cats all over. The smell of poop & cat pee is making him gag. He's putting in windows. You have to walk sideways in the house. There is no room that doesn't have crap piled up. Not even the hallways. When they got to the daughters room there was her daughter in bed with her boyfriend. Did I mention the daughter was 16!!! He said he had to climb over mounds of crap to even get to the window. He's dying to pee but, took one look at there only bathroom & couldn't. I will not be surpirsed if he doesn't walk out on this job. He already said he's burning his clothes.
1-How can people live like this?'
2-How do ask people to come work on your house & have it look like that?

That's what I don't understand. I know there are people who live like that and perhaps they are not embarassed, but it seems incongruous that someone who has that much disregard for their suroundings would put forth the effort to update their windows.

I would tell him to report it to his company and see if he can leave. It could be a health hazard just to have him work there!

my fil's friend was about to put his house on the market and asked dh and i if we were interested. we took a look and that's exactly how the house was, we couldn't believe they would let us see it like that....but i guess that's just how some people live.
so gross though.....

We bought our house from family and it was full of crap. Like every room was hip deep in stuff. What is now my son's room we couldn't get into, we have to push the door as hard as we could to move it a little and pull stuff out little by little. There is still one room that is used for storage that we didn't really get to yet, I'm so embarassed when someone has to go in there to repair something. I end up telling them the whole story.

It's such a sad situation when people live like this. It's a psychiatric illness: OCD hoarding. Some people hoard animals (there was that news story of that mansion where a woman was hoarding cats); and others hoard objects.
The worst thing about this illness is that there's an extremely low success rate with treatment.

There was just an article in Marie Claire about people who hoarde.... It's an actual mental sickness people have. They have no control over it, but that's how they NEED to live... but if you saw them out of the street, they could be anyone, a lawyer, a Dr., you accountant.
If your DH is that skeeved, I would tell him to leave... just because this homeowner has an illness doesn't mean your DH should BECOME ill because of it. 
ETA: This article also mentioned that hoarding is hereditary. One woman they interviewed, her mother was a hoarding and as an adult woman (the daughter) was discovering hoarding tendancies in her own life. Creepy.

We looked at a house like that. I couldn't believe they were trying to actually sell the house.
We had to skip the basement because of the dirty clothes pile at the bottom of the stairs. It was too big to get around.

I agree. The people who live across the street from my IL's are like this. Their house is literally falling apart. It's so bad they had to move out and are living in a hotel The front of the house looks like it's going to fall off the structure. The neighbors are pretty sure there are racoons and other critters living there because they can see many of them on the property.
BTW: Houses in their neighborhood start at 700K. Every other house on the block is prestine.
They have repeatedly called the town.
This same couple destroyed another house in a neighboring town 20 years ago.
Their own children and grandchildren stopped visiting them several years ago.

It's sad, and you sometimes chuck things like this up to laziness, but I think this lady has a serious mental condition that needs to be reported.
I say after he finishes his job he should call the authorities if not for her, then to save her poor cats from this!!

Yuck. Well it's like that woman that was on OPRAH she was a hoarder and her place sounds like the one you are describing and thought nothing of it. I guess they think there is nothing wrong with what they are doing. Maybe to them it's normal.
If I was your DH I would have walked out!

I was watchijnn How Clean is Your House on BBC America yesterday and these women were on Oprah when that woman was on. It's amazing that people really live amongst all that filth. It is garbage everywhere. Sad.
