So frustrated w/ feedings - am at a loss here...
I've been on here posting so much about formulas, feeding issues, etc....last week at the pediatrician, I explained how DS was struggling at feedings; he cries, always needs a burp. We've been through a few formulas already. The dr noticed he had a lot of redness, which I thought was baby acne. He thought it could be either eczema or a food allergy. To rule out a food allergy, he put him on Nutramagin. I know I am impatient, but today is day 5 and his feedings still get bad - I must have had to burp him 9x during one bottle. His face looks fine, still a little red, but I truly do not think it's more than the acne. Anyway, I think he has horrible gas, but it's killing me b/c I've tried everything from mylicon to new nipples to bottles, etc....You would think the Nutramagin, the "elite" of formulas would help the gas, but it's not. Unless I need more time for it to "kick in". I'm impatient because I'm going back to work Monday and this is not good!! Is there anything a dr could prescribe for gas??? Or do you think the Nutramagin just needs more time to work? Please help, any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Have your tried giving some gripe water before feedings? DD has been on Alimentum for a bit and does well during the day, but nights are rough...so we give her gripe water at night and it seems to help. besides that the ped only said mylicon, but that made her gas worse.

Have you tried the other gas meds - Kristina had a very good experience with Baby Gas X, and there's also Little Tummies too....

My son has a milk allergy which Nutramigen didn't help since it's milk based. It usually helps most milk protein allergies since the proteins are pre-digested. Once my son went onto Neocate he was like a new kid.
Unfortunately you do have to give it a little more time to see if it's going to help. We were told 2 weeks before we were switched to Necoate.

I have the gripe water and am afraid to give it to him. We gave him some last night. It seems like a huge does - the little tummies says to give one tsp which I think means filling the dropper twice

Kristina is 8 months old, and I still only give her one full dropper AND THAT'S IT!

So is that half the dose the recommend? That's what we did b/c I thought the full does seemed like too much.

I can only say what worked for us. We gave Gripe water before the feedings and added the mylicon to every bottle. Between that and the Nutramigen we saw quite a difference, but it did take a few days.

I hate to say it but I think you may need more time. We switched DS to Good Start due to gas issues, although they were not as bad as yours, but it took 10 days for us to see a real difference.
What bottles are you using?
For the Little tummies, I have always only used 1 dropper full and DS is 10 months and 26+lbs. I don’t remember it saying to give them 1tbsp.

I'm not sure.... all I know is that I have ALWAYS ONLY given her one full dropper and that was it..... I don't think there's a need to give her more than that - I really give it to her now when she's got unending hiccups, and the one dropper full works instantly, so I don't see a need to give her more than that.

I was actually hoping that it just means I need to give it time.

It may need more time and you may have to go through more formula changes. Maybe a ready to feed will work better than a powdered. DD has gastritis too and her Ped. has her on Mylanta 3x a day. It make a huge difference!

Wow, really, the mylanta works??? I'm going to give it another week and call the ped again. I have to call them to discuss how the Nutramagin works anyway.

yes, we've managed her reflux and gastritis (plus colic) with Alimentum (now with oatmeal cereal a few time...another major help) and Mylanta.
DD was spitting up large amounts a few times per feeding (basically every hour or more), spitting up digested formula, fighting the bottle, screaming with burps and hiccups, had hiccups often (some days it was every 1.5-2 hours and they would last for 20-30 min), had loud, very smelly gas all the time, you could tell she was in pain, etc. The Mylanta has helped a lot!
Also, from what I've learned, some of these special formulas (in our case Alimentum RFT) is thinner than other formulas and BM, so that is/was a contribuing factor in DD spitting up too.

Thanks for the info; I have been giving him gripe water today - the past 2 feedings have been good, but I'm not getting excited yet!! He was spitting up the first few days on the Nutramagin, but it has been less the past 2 days (knock on wood). Honestly, I think each baby is either a spitter or not, so they will probably spit up no matter what formula you give him/her - although, I do notice some formulas cause more spit up than others.
DS gets the hiccups everyday - but normally just once or twice, but they do last about 20 minutes; I feel so bad for him
If the Nutramagin helps, I will hold my breath waiting to see if insurance covers it - this stuff is freakin expensive!! Luckily, my friend whose DS has been on it, gave me several cans since he is now one and might not need it anymore.

Give him the gripe water for the hiccups too!!!!!!!!!!!!! They cure Kristina's before she even finishes the dropper full!!!!!!!!!!
