Smithtown or Commack?
DH and I are torn between these two towns. I think Commack is a better school district but I have heard from people who are not from Commack who said they've heard that Commack is changing.
I don't know what to believe but we are doing most of the home search in Commack. But then I hear great things about Smithtown.
If you know anything about these towns, please explain what you like, don't like, etc. Any info is appreciated! THANKS!

IMO, they are both equal.
As far as the quotation above, I wouldn't listen to anyone who had negative things to say that didn't live there themselves.
Kings Park is good, too.

DH & I are looking in both area's as well and right now we live in commack and would like to stay here. Smithtown is nice too but the drug problem there is much larger then commack. I know its everywhere but the less the better. Commack hasn't changed a bit. been here for 27 years.

I agree, you cant go wrong with either, Kings Park included. Im originally from Commack (where DH was a HS teacher), moved to Kings Park and now live in Smithtown.
They are all great schools and great areas. I think youd be safe with any of them.

They are both very good. Smithtown is a larger district which has it's pros and con.
As far as this is concern:
Smithtown is nice too but the drug problem there is much larger then commack. I know its everywhere but the less the better.
At least Smithtown acknowledges there is a problem and is doing something about it, because there is a drug problem in almost every school on LI. Even those schools that claim to be the best, they just keep it hush, hush

I know nothing about the school districts but as a general rule, I don't take any opinion seriously until they answer the question "Why?" in an articulated, factual matter. Or asking "How do you know that?"...
A lot of people just repeat things they hear without knowing why. Although I think it's natural, it's not something I'd buy into.
Do people post "How is this SD?" questions on Parenting? If not, I think that would be a good thing to do also, if the parents don't frequent the Home board. Especially ones with older children.

I rented in smithtown for 9 months, hated it, hated 347 traffic it was terrible. In general I had no other complaints against the town. But I would never live there again. We bought our home in Kings Park . HTH

Yes, 347 is terrible and trying to get through town is hard during rush hour but there are ways around it, if you know the cut throughs.

grew up in kings park.
house shopped in KP, smithtown, northport, commack.
we ended up in smithtown/nesconset for several reasons.
1. cheaper taxes
2. we like the fact that there is a main street.
3. we are close to EVERYTHING. mall, movies, work, LIE
i dont think you can go wrong in either area. they are pretty similar.
and KIMMY... i love you.. but the reason that it *seems* the drug problem is more prominent in smithtown is because the district, town, cops, and parents are addressing it instead of sweeping it under the rug like MOST school districts on LI do.

Yes, 347 is terrible and trying to get through town is hard during rush hour but there are ways around it, if you know the cut throughs.
they also broke ground this week on a new 347 expansion, they are adding a 3rd lane, where it runs through Smithtown.
Ive lived in the area all of my life and never had a traffic issue. Like the poster said, there are definitely back roads around it.

I agree. I have lived here my whole life and went to school here - I only graduated in 2002 and I never, ever even saw a single drug. Now, of course, there is a problem that is being addressed - as there is everywhere. But, personally, I never saw it so it had to have been something that grew after I graduated although it hasn't been that long. At least they are tackling it and taking the bull by the horns on this one. They are a very active district - when there was an issue with anything they were right on things. And as far as Commack goes, I have to laugh out loud, no offense to anyone, that says the problem there is little to none... OMGGG I have never seen drugs like I saw them when I dated my boyfriend who went there - we went out for almost four years. It was RAMPANT. Before that, I had never seen a drug in my life - and I went out with people a lot - there was drinking but I didn't see anything. UNTIL I met Jeff. When I met him it was coke, vicadin being snorted, it was crystal meth, it was constant pot usage, it was BAD. I'm best friends with his younger brother who went there his entire life and is the first one to tell you how bad it was. Now, don't get me wrong, you get these problems everywhere - esp with money. However, to say one is less than the other is crazy.
And in terms of ratings, grades, who goes on to four year colleges, etc. the actual statistics show they are pretty equal, if not Smithtown edging the other out because it has so many more students so you have to add that into the equation. You can't compare 10 thou with 4 thou, KWIM? But you can check out MLS or Newsday for the hard stats. When I graduated, that year, 96% went on to four year colleges - and the grades on the state tests and everything else were excellent. We had tons of kids in my grade that went to Ivy League schools let alone good schools. I know several who are now in Medical School - three of them one state science awards. The schooling was excellent.

Hmm that's funny about the traffic - I never really noticed the traffic. The 347 issue bothers me PAST the mall - when I get out by Stony Brook movie theatre. That is where I always end up stuck and dragging. I avoid Main St during rush hour which is easy because you just take one of the 4387498574 side roads lol lol to get around it. Very simple! My whole life it's been this way - I love that we are close to the Northern, the LIE, the Mall, the beaches on the north, we have a nice Main St town - everything is right here. I never have an issue with traffic. The only other place I lived was Fort Salonga which didn't have any traffic but it was SO far from everything that of course there wouldn't be traffic - you are up in the boon docks! All my friends used to make fun of me b/c of where I lived when I lived there. Took them FOREVER to get there!

I grew up in Commack and now live in Smithtown. We looked in both areas, as well as Hauppauge when we were house hunting.
I think any of the districts mentioned above are good (obviously, or we wouldn't have looked there  ) but I have to agree with PP that there are definitely drugs in Commack - my brother graduated in 2006 and I know what he saw. I definitely think that they are everywhere.
We ended up in Town of Smithtown with Hauppauge schools (the Pines). The location is fantastic (right where NSP ends at 347 and between Jericho and 347) and the taxes are SOOOO much lower since we have Hauppauge schools. If you haven't looked here, you might want to take a look. We were able to go up in house price because the taxes were so much lower and we got a bigger house with more property.
In answer to your question, you definitley can't go wrong with either Smithtown or Commack.

I agree with this.
It also bothers me when I hear people say that the drug problem is bigger in Smithtown....I mean how do you quantify that? Do we actually know the % using for one SD vs the other?? It it because we hear about it, is it because the superintendent said that even if (i paraphrase here) 2% of the student body is using drugs its too much? but this is off topic.
The other thing to consider with the above argument....I know my DS wont be in HS for another 12 years....who says in that time Smithtown will be considered "clean" vs another district. Truth is nobody knows...
Personally I would buy in Smithtown, Commack, Northport or KP without hesitation.

Ditto on everything. I grew up in Smithtown and always stayed "close to home" in neighboring communities. I ended up working based out of Smithtown and decided I wanted to stay. We have family and friends nearby, the schools are great and you are close to everything. I "hear" good things about Commack, but don't "know" anything about it. We also looked in Kings Park.

Amen! Please fix over by Stony Brook movie theatre and the diner out to aboutttttt hmmm Chili's in East Northport! That's the problem!
Oh and yes the Northern in Hauppauge up to the DMV area!
Funny lol b/c both areas that need help are just outside of the Smithtown border!
