Slow Cooker Applesauce
We're hoping to go apple picking next week and I would love some new apple recipes to try.
Does anyone have a good (and easy) slow cooker applesause recipe to share?
TIA

Re: Slow Cooker Applesauce
I have a super simple applesauce recipe. Its so easy, but its not a slow cooker, just on the stove.
8-10 apples 1/2 c water 2 tablespoons sugar juice of 1/2 lemon cinnamon (or apple pie spices)
peel & core the apples and cut into large chunks. Place in a large pot with the water. Sprinkle a few shakes of cinnamon or apple pie spices onto the apples. Add the sugar and the lemon juice.
Put over a low flame for 20-30 minutes and mix occasionally. When the apples are mushy, take a potato masher and mash away.
Cool outside of the fridge for 1/2 hour and then put in the fridge.
Ive made this many times and it is so easy and so good! It makes slightly chunky applesauce, if you like it completely smooth, you could probably use an immersion blender or put the apple mixture into a blender.

Re: Slow Cooker Applesauce
From eatathome. . .
This amount of apples makes 4-6 servings
* 13 small apples (about 1 bag) * juice of 1 lemon * 1 tsp. cinnamon * 1 tsp. vanilla * 4 Tbs. brown sugar * 1/3 cup apple juice
Peel, core and slice the apples. Toss them into the slow cooker with all the other ingredients. Give it a stir, then turn the heat to low for 4-6 hours.
After the apples had cooked this long, I took the lid off and gave them a stir. They looked kind of watery and I wasn’t sure it would really turn into applesauce. But the apples were very tender. I took a whisk and stirred them vigorously until the apples started falling apart. I ended up with chunky applesauce that was delicious. I let it continue to cook until I had dinner ready.

Re: Slow Cooker Applesauce
also from eat at home. . slow cooked oatmeal
* 2 cups oatmeal (regular or steel cut) * 1 3/4 cups water (2 cups if using steel cut oats) * 1 3/4 cups apple juice ( 2 cups if using steel cut oats) * 1/3 cup brown sugar * 1 tsp. cinnamon * 1 tsp. vanilla * dash nutmeg * 1 small apple, peeled and diced tiny
I used a 4 quart slow cooker for this. It has to cook such a long time, you want the oatmeal to fill as much of the crock as possible. If it doesn’t, it will cook too hot.
Spray the crock with cooking spray so you can clean it easier the next morning. Oatmeal is sticky.
Put all the ingredients in the crock and stir to combine. Turn it on low as you’re going to bed. I turned mine on at 10pm and cooked it till about 7am. If you have a programmable slow cooker, cook it for about 5 hours on low for steel cut or 3 for regular oats.
This recipe makes 4 large servings.
I had never cooked or even seen, steel cut oats until I bought them for this recipe. They do cost more money than regular. And I thought they looked like horse food. I’ve never seen horse food either, but that’s what it should look like. Let me tell you, a horse would be very happy to be served a bowl of this apple oatmeal!
Here’s what the steel cut oats look like before they’re cooked:
I preferred the steel cut for this recipe, but the regular work fine too. One trick I’ve heard is to buy a Christmas light timer and hook it up to your slow cooker. That way you can program it to cook for a shorter amount of time. Especially helpful if you’re using regular oats.
