sleeping on your side?

after the episode I had in the hospital yesterday ( see my post on pressure in pelvis) they told me no sleeping on my back at this point in my pregnancy (I am 24 week) and to sleep on only Left or Right side. does anyone know why this is or what can happen if I fall asleep on my back in the middle of the night? TIA!

Re: sleeping on your side?

Sleeping on your side keeps pressure off a vein that brings blood to the placenta. Sleeping on your left is better than your right, but either side is better than your back or belly.

Re: sleeping on your side?

I always start on my side and wake up on my back. I used to sleep on my back before I was PG, so sleeping on my side has been hard to get used to.

Try buying a body pillow and propping it behind your back - it will avoid you rolling onto your back during the night whenyou are sleeping. It is not good to sleep on your back as it puts pressure on your aorta which is not good for the baby. Sleeping on your left side is the best for circulation.

Re: sleeping on your side?

I was always a belly or back sleeper. I bought a body pillow and I put it on by left side and hug it. I love it. It was the best thing i bought.

I was told if you do roll over in your sleep not to panic, just roll back on your side when you realize.

I bought the snoogle, which I did not like foe awhile but in the end for the last 2 or so months I could not have lived without it. They sell it at BRU.

I couldn't live without my Snoogle either. Sometimes I still just get so uncomfortable on my side that I'll sleep on my back for a while. I think your body would let you know if you were on your back too long.

From http://kidshealth.org/parent/pregnancy_newborn/pregnancy/sleep_during_pregnancy.html etd.:

Some doctors specifically recommend that pregnant women sleep on the left side. Because your liver is on the right side of your abdomen, lying on your left side helps keep the uterus off that large organ. Ask what your doctor recommends - in most cases, lying on either side should do the trick and help take some pressure off your back.

If you do shift onto your back and the baby's weight presses on your inferior vena cava, the discomfort will probably wake you up. See what your doctor recommends about this; he or she may suggest that you use a pillow to keep yourself propped up on one side.

Re: sleeping on your side?

DH wakes me up if he finds me on my back during the night. I try to put a pillow behind my back so I don't roll over and lay flat.

Re: sleeping on your side?

I was always advised to sleep on my left side preferably and right was ok. Many times I would wake on my back and midwife says just to roll back on left. At this point in pregnancy I would be happy to sleep standing up Chat Icon as I am so uncomfy! Now I just have a bunch of pillows propped up behind me Chat Icon

Re: sleeping on your side?

My doc said not to worry how you sleep. He said to sleep in any position that is comfortable. He said the information that you can't sleep on your back has been blown out of proportion. I fall asleep on my side now (31 weeks) mainly because it is more comfortable. If I wake up on my back I don't panic. I just find another comfortable position and go back to sleep.

This may be for others but Dawn is having other issues (pressure, etc.). Her doctor advised her NOT to lay an her back.
