Sleeping on your right side
I was just talking to my sister and she was saying how when she was pg you couldn't sleep on your right side. I was like no it's your back. I know the left is better but has anyone heard of the right side being bad?

Re: Sleeping on your right side
Honestly, i thought this is only true later in pregnancy and I thought you weren't supposed to sleep on your back or your LEFT side.

Re: Sleeping on your right side
At almost 33 weeks Im lucky i get any sleep at all I try to stay on my left side but during the night all i do is toss and turn i end up on my back and right side at several points during the evening. I never heard anything about sleeping on your right side. Even sleeping on your back isnt bad for the baby it just can make you, the momma, very uncomfortable and dizzy due to shortness of breath.

I believe that our bodies will tell us what isnt good for us... That being said, whatever is more comfortable is prob what is best!

This is incorrect, Left lateral position is optimal.

Amen! At this point I'd sleep on my head if it guaranteed a good nights sleep

ITA.
I switch sides throughout the night - otherwise the side I'm sleeping on starts to hurt!
I read one side was preferred over the other but, the other one isn't bad.

Re: Sleeping on your right side
If sleeping on your right side is bad for baby I wouldn't have DS. That was the ONLY side I felt comfortable. And it's the same for this pregnancy. Honestly unless your dr tells you not to do something I would do what's comfortable. Especially at the end when you're barely getting sleep.

Re: Sleeping on your right side
I actually sleep better on my right side. But I try to switch it up from right to left in between my many bathroom breaks.

Re: Sleeping on your right side
My acupuncturist told me that laying on your right side everything is pressing on your liver. I am 36 weeks and found myself switching from left to right every few hours.

Re: Sleeping on your right side
Sleeping on your left side is best for a few reasons. First, you keep the weight of the baby and placenta off of your vena cava...same reason why sleeping on your back is not good. But more importantly, sleeping on your left can encourage the baby to nestle into the best position for birthing.....Left Occiput Anterior. Babies who's backs end up on their mother's right side are often in a posterior or transverse position, which causes increased labor time, difficulty descending, increased pain and back labor to due skull bone on back bone, greater likelihood of substantially tearing from a sunny-side-up presentation, and increased risk of c-section.

Oh wow... Interesting info... Thanks! Any idea if its different if you have an anterior placenta?

Re: Sleeping on your right side
No...actually, left sided sleeping might be more beneficial to someone with an AP because that position of the placenta is statistically correlated with more right sided babies....although there doesn't seem to be any causality from what I've found. I have an AP. Left-sided-only sleeping helped my baby to flip from an exclusively right sided position to left. The location of the placenta will always impact where the baby ends up snuggling into though, but I don't think that an anterior or posterior placenta makes a substantial difference. The most important factors that determine baby positioning are the shape of your uterus and the symmetry of your pelvis...and of course, baby's preferences. They are little, willful humans before they make their appearance into the world!!
