Sleep study for toddler

Has anyone had their almost 2 year old do a sleep study for apnea? My ds is 20 months old and he snores and struggles to breath at some points while sleeping. He's a very restless sleeper. I've counted up to 5 seconds of him not breathing. My ped says no regular ent will want to touch him at this age and we will have to see a specialist. (His tonsils are huge, close to touching) But she was kinda leaning towards trying to wait it out. I'm not sure if we should anymore though. I feel like it's bad, but I have nothing to judge it by. Anyone have any info on sleep studies or having tonsils out this early?

Re: Sleep study for toddler

My dc had a sleep study at 2.5 years for similar reasons... snoring, paused breathing, cranky, not eating. We were referred for the sleep study by an ent we saw at prohealth. He didn't want to perform surgery on ds so told us to take flonase, which didn't do a thing. I went to Dr. Mendelsohn in garden city for a second opinion a few months later & he told me how blocked he was & he could shave his tonsils & adenoids. Shaving is a much better recovery than removal. The changes I saw in my son afterwards were amazing. He was happier, gained weight, and slept quietly. His quality of life became so much better. I definitely recommend getting a second opinion.

Take him to a pediatric ent. They do this day and night. All of my kids have had their tonsils and adenoids shaved. One son had his tonsils and adenoids shaved at 18 months. He had what they call kissing tonsils. They were literally touching. Made a huge difference immediately.

Re: Sleep study for toddler

When DS2 was 2, he had mono. His tonsils were still huge a few months later so we went to a pediatric ENT. He had always been a heavy breather and restless sleeper. He also frequently got ear infections and a fever with colds. The ENT said we could do a sleep study, but he didn't see the need for it because it was evident that his tonsils and adenoids needed to be removed.

He had the surgery at almost 2.5. Due to his age, we had to stay in the hospital overnight. The recovery was really tough, but it was well worth it. The apnea was gone, he stopped breathing so heavily, he slept soundly and he has had only 1 or 2 ear infections in almost 2 years since the surgery.

Thanks! I never knew they could just shave the tonsils. I'm going to ask about this.
