SLEEP REGRESSION 14 months *UPDATED*

Someone please tell me w t h is going on!! I cant even go into detail bc I'm so upset right now. DS is 14m old and 3 molars are partly through. I've been giving him motrin almost every night. Tonight I even gave him the hylands teething tablets and orajel. He seems to hate his crib again. I started CIO at 8m. He did fine after a few nights. At that time his whole schedule changed also. He went from 3 naps to 2 and his bedtime got earlier. I know at some point he's supposed to go to 1 nap but he's still taking 2, at least 4x a week. His schedule must be changing again which is the only thing I could think of. Idk what to do. We still have the same bedtime routine with his only bottle at night, I give it to him as I put on his pajamas then he finishes it as I rock him to sleep on the rocking chair in his room with the lights off and the sound machine on. Nothing changed. Last night he woke up SCREAMING around 3:30am. I went in to rock him again, I was going to give him more motrin but he fell asleep on me pretty quickly. I rocked him for 45 mins to make sure he was sleeping. I was completely exhausted obviously and THISCLOSE to bringing him to bed with me. I cant do that bc he'll roll off the bed, he sleeps all over the place. I also know that completely defeats the purpose of CIO. I just dont know what to do. He's so big when I rock him he's completely draped over me, his legs are bent and his head barely fits on my shoulder. Idk how long I'm supposed to keep doing this for. I'm dreading to another big CIO by putting him in awake. He's older now, his voice is soooo much louder and he screams and whines and cries. Should I give him a "big boy" bedtime routine and just give him a sippy of milk while I read him a story after his bath and then put him in awake?? I cant keep doing this, my nerves are shot and I'm on edge all night. I also have my period right now so my emotions are really extreme. Please tell me I'm not alone here. UPDATE 3/15
Ok I changed his bedtime routine tonight. I'm going to keep it very consistant so he understands. This isn't going so well.

I gave him a bath, brushed his teeth, gave him his 1st bedtime sippy (no bottle) while I read him some stories about bedtime. When he finished his milk (I was surprised he finished all 8oz not in a bottle) and I finished reading I gave him his pacifier and put him right in the crib. That was at 7:30. He's yelling and screaming right now Chat Icon I guess this is another CIO night #1 Chat Icon

I have had to re-do CIO a couple of times and it has never been as hard at the first time. Usually takes one night only. Maybe give it a shot? Sorry you are feeling bad Chat Icon Chat Icon

I would give it a try. Joey was fighting me to take even his sippy in the dark, so I switched to music on/sippy & reading with lights on & now just 2 weeks ago, he started to take his sippy, walk into the den, wants to sit on the couch, drink his milk and have me read to him out there. He doesn't even want me to rock and read with him anymore Chat Icon He does great. You could be surprised, you never know.

Do you rock him completely to sleep at night still? or just this week b/c he regressed?

I used to be able to put him in awake after a little rocking. Now he screams as soon as I stand up. Chat Icon So I've been trying to do it until he falls asleep. He wakes up everytime though, as soon as I stand up.

Thanks Carolyn for letting me know its normal to do this every few months.

Re: SLEEP REGRESSION 14 months

same thing happen with DD I was rocking her to sleep and when she was asleep I put her down then 20 mins later she was up screaming. she kept getting up every 2 hours and I couldn't deal with the lack of sleep. I stopped rocking her and put her in her crib and let her CIO. I did go in after 10mins to reassure her. No she goes down and she listens to her CD music and soothes herself to sleep.

Thank you! I think I'll be trying this new bedtime routine tomorrow. He CAN put himself to sleep, he just wants to sleep on me all night. He's almost 30lbs! I cant even understand how he's even comfortable on me anymore lol.

We're going through the same exact thing over here, but our DCs share a bedroom so it's a PITA to go back to CIO. The poor 3-year-old gets mad and yells at the little teether and then the whole house is awake. Chat Icon

CIO is not fun but it will work.....just stick with it. I stopped letting ds fall asleep on me with the bottle around 12 or 13 months. He did surprisingly good with it and he can be very difficult with change. I replaced the rocking and the bottle in his room with 3 short songs that I sing to him. I start singing them as I walk to his room with him and I either walk around or sit in his chair for a minute or two with him while I finish singing and then put him down. Never a peep out of him. Re: SLEEP REGRESSION 14 months *UPDATED*

Our boys are so on the same pattern. Although with DS its a combo of major teething - I can't even tell which teeth anymore all his gums are swollen it seems like and just having a bad virus with fever the last three nights. I knew it was a mistake but with him sick, I was rocking him alot. So of course, last night- no fever but he cried until I rocked him and at one point I even had to take him out of the room - went to bed at 10pm! Tonight, since he's better, just teething I knew I had to CIO - he cried for about 4o minutes - it stinks! We go on vaca next week and I'm dreading coming back knowing I'll probly need to CIO again too! Its so hard every few months! Hope tomorrow night is better for you two!

Re: SLEEP REGRESSION 14 months *UPDATED*

Hang in there - it's hard but sooo worth it! Even my DH can handle putting DD to bed now! We read to her while she has milk in a straw cup, we put on her sleepsack, use tooth wipes on her teeth, give her the paci, a kiss goodnight and goodbye. She may sometimes take awhile to fall asleep after we leave her, but eventually she gets there every night on her own and it's really nice. We've also had to re-do CIO before and it's always easier to re-do than the first time (and for us, the first time was not that bad). Hope this time CIO is easy on you! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Believe me, I know how that goes! It's a good thing we have our own place and just ignore them because all I heard back then was how could you just listen to her cry, I couldn't do THAT, how cruel, your husband didn't sleep through the night until a year - it's just what you have to endure, etc.

It's funny, now that DD's so easy, when she goes to MIL for a sleepover, everyone is SO amazed at how easy she is to put to bed, esp since none of MIL's 3 kids were so easy. I just nod and say, yup, that's what sleep training can do. Her friends are expecting grandkids and want to know what my secret is - this vindication feels deeply satisfying, lol.

Just stick to your guns - you know what you are doing is right and you will reap the benefits of that! Chat Icon

yep this is what i want when he sleeps over my parents house or when we go on vacation. They really got him used to the rocking, letting him sleep on the couch, the bed, the futon, the carriage. I dont want that, its not safe and theres no reason for it. And I dont want to spend 2 hours every night on vacation going in and out rocking him everytime he wakes up. He knows how to sleep, I cant spoil him now, how do they expect me to have a newborn one day and a big toddler who can only be treated as a newborn? I know it will be fine, maybe not perfect, but better than what its been lately!
