Sleep issues...help!
Sorry this is long...
DS started sleeping through the night about a month ago (~10 or 11 weeks) for 8 or 9 hours a night. He did it consistently for a few weeks. Then around 14 weeks he started waking up again for his 3/4am feeding - so only sleeping ~6 hours straight.
He was breaking out of his swaddle, so I tried buying a bigger swaddle. Now he either doesn't break out, but still wakes up hungry. Or, last night he broke out A LOT (12, 3, 4). I'd reswaddle and he'd fall right back to sleep until his 4am, when he screamed and clearly wanted a bottle.
So my questions...if he was going 8 or 9 hours a night, isn't he still capable of it? Do I need to try CIO? I think he should be getting enough food during the day (6, 6oz bottles), though he legitimately seems hungry at 4am.
Do I try to get him off the swaddle? I'm not convinced, though, that swaddling has much to do with his waking. I just think once he's up, he's strong enough to break out - no matter how tightly I swaddle him. But I don't think it's what actually wakes him up. And I tried 1 arm out of his swaddle for a night but when he woke up, the only way he'd go back to sleep was me fully swaddling.

Re: Sleep issues...help!
DS is about the same age as yours. I read to stop swaddling at 2 months so we stopped then but I know other people continue for longer. It didn't impact his sleep one way or another, hs still gets up anywhere from every 3-5 hours. On a few occasions he's gone 6 hours. We're BF so I don't know if that's why or if I'm just unlucky. DD didn't STTN until she was a year old.
As far as the CIO, I never tried it but I think this is still too young for that.

I should add that DS's gastro told me that since he was STTN I should now let him cry 15 or 20 minutes at night b/c he's waking to eat out of habit, not hunger. I do think DS is hungry, but I also don't think he NEEDS the food at 3am since he didn't 2 weeks ago!

Hmm, that's tough then. I would do what you feel is right. I always had a hard time with CIO and even when my doctor told me to do it becuase DD was too old to "need" to eat in the middle of the night, I still couldn't not BF her when she woke.
I'd go with your gut and do what you think DS needs. I still think this is young to let them cry but that's just my opinion.

I didnt have a STTN until she was 9 mo old so i have no advice but what I do know is that at certain ages she did eat more or sleep more. it was cycles. It could be that you are right and LO is waking for food. You would know best not a MD that sees your kid for 20 min (IMO) mom always knows best. I think there was something growth wise at around 20 weeks. hang in there

When he wakes up at 4am, how much is he eating? I wouldn't do cry it out if he's taking a whole bottle. If he's only drinking a couple ounces then try it and see if he puts himself to sleep.
Are you feeding any solids?
I don't think swaddling is an issue. When my son started breaking out of them I just swaddled with his arms out. Also my son started waking up earlier when he started trying to roll onto his stomach. Could he be trying that as well?

He's eating a whole bottle. He ALWAYS eats a whole bottle. He's a hungry kid
He just started rolling tummy to back, and is almost able to do back to tummy, so it could be that. Who knows.

I believe he is too young to cry it out. We didn't do it until 8 months when they can understand more. My twins are now 18M & the go through fazes of sleeping through night & then sometimes waking up. You will see how things always change when you have it figured out. Hang in there. I personally never swaddled & have heard about people haveing trouble trying to break the habit later on. (hooked on it like a binki) IF you can stop it now, I would.
