Re: Sleep Apnea?

My primary doctor thought I had sleep apnea since I snored VERY loud and woke up exhausted-even after a full nights rest.
He needs to be seen by an ENT for an evaluation, theyy'll probably do a sleep study on him. I have a great doctor in POrt Jefferson if that's by you.

Re: Sleep Apnea?

Beth, give my doc a call. He has an arsenal of physicians that he knows very well.

His doc didn't recommend someone?

Dr. Eric Last
516-785-2783

He will probably want to see Jake first..it's a good idea to see a gp or internist first.

He's in Bellmore..not too bad of a trip for you.

Is he snoring really bad and does he stop breathing in the middle of the night?

Re: Sleep Apnea?

My mother has it. Her doctor referred her to a neurologist, who then referred her to a sleep clinic. I'm not sure if you have to go through so many channels. Jake's doctor may be able to refer him to a sleep clinic directly.
At the sleep clinic they observe his sleep and then make recommendations - like a breathing mask, etc.

Re: Sleep Apnea?

My father spent a night in the sleep clinic. They evaluate your sleep patterns and determine if you have sleep apnea and to what extent.

My dad is SUPPOSED to sleep with this machine that kinda looks like a mini vacuum, but he doesn't.

I think I might have sleep apnea, too. But I don't snore. Can you have sleep apnea without snoring? I find I wake up 4-5 times a night..................

Re: Sleep Apnea?

My DH has sleep apnea and sleeps with a machine. He went to the Columbia Presbiterian Sleep Clinic and got help ... it is a vicious cycle ... you are sooo tired so you sleep more but you are not getting rest so you wake up even more tired ...

When my husband had the sleep study they told him he woke up 243 times in a 2-hour period ... that is every 30 seconds his body "wakes" .... so if he slept 8-hours per night, it was the equivilant of getting 2 hours of rest per night ... it's awful.

Re: Sleep Apnea?

does it sound like he stops breathing or gasps for air? DH would go very quiet, his chest would move up and down but no air would come in or be released, then he would inhale deeply and "catch up" on getting oxygen ... over and over and over again ...

Heaviness is also a symptom of sleep apnea ... because your body is not resting and you are always tired, you naturally eat more to get more energy ... and because the body is exhausted, it stores the ennergy it does receive ... vicious cycle.

A pulmonologist can set your husband up with a sleep study. My father is getting one done this month through Winthrop Pulmonology.

Good Luck.

Re: Sleep Apnea?

My DH has severe sleep apnea. He saw an ENT and had to go for a sleep study. He now has what they call a CPAP machine (a mask that pushes oxygen in thru his nose) to sleep with at night. He jokes that he becomes an alien at night but...... NO MORE SNORING!!! He doesn't stop breathing anymore. He sleeps much better & feels much better.

He saw Dr Anthony Cornetta in Huntington Station - 631-425-2145

I just found out that I have sleep apnea. I went the sleep clinic twice. You mentioned that his neck dr recomended it. Well when I went to my primary I always complain that Im tired but I also have a underactive thyroid. He said that because I have a short but wide neck I might have it. I dont snore, Actually my DH has to shake me to make sure Im still breathing, I forget how many times I woke up they said. But I have the machine. It is just uncomfortable for me and the air comes out some my dog keeps trying to bite the maskChat Icon

My DH is the same way. He just had a sleep study done with North Shore's slep study center. His follow up appt. is next week. We'll see what he has to say.

Re: Sleep Apnea?

I have it. It was diagnosed after a pulmonologist sent me for a sleep study, which consisted of 2 nights, the first to determine if you have it, the second to determine the level the CPAP machine should be set at. My test came back that I was waking up an average of 30 times an hour.

I'm still adjusting to the machine, but I sleep a LOT better with it than without.

I would encourage your DH to do the sleep study, b/c if he does have apnea, without treatment it could lead to heart disease.

Re: Sleep Apnea?

Does your husband still have his tonsils?

I used to snore really loudly and would wake up choking or gasping sometimes - not every night - but frequently. I never had a sleep study done but I had my tonsils removed. I had crazy huge tonsils and my ENT doctor recommended my removing them (I also got 5 or 6 cases of tonsilitis a year). At age 29 I got them removed by Dr. Dynia at Manhattan Eye, Ear and throat. I'll be 33 in 2 weeks and - I'm not kidding - I havent snored once, havent had any symptoms of sleep apnea - and I swear - I havent gotten sick in 4 years. Not one sore throat, no flu, no bronchitis - nothing. Best thing I ever did for myself.
