SIL was hurt by her bf...
Tell me what you know about domestic abuse. I know nothing...
He was arrested. She is semi-ok no broken bones that we know of, but very bruised and shaken.
What happens to men like this in NY state? Do they get more than community service? I believe this is a 1st offense for him, but I really want to make sure he doesn't come anywhere near her or the family again.
Will she need to get a restraining order or is that given?
Oy, this ******* knows where I live too. Oy.

I have no idea, but I wanted to send some and to your SIL. I hope she is ok and gets away from him! I think she should definitely file for a order of protection. She has proof - he was arrested!

You may be able to find something on this site .
I'm so sorry your SIL has to deal with this crap. I would imagine it would be handled like a regular assault case.
As inappropriate as this sounds, I'd like to take a bat to the guy myself.

Re: SIL was hurt by her bf...
Thanks for the link.
I wish I could be there with her but I have to be home with DS.
DH is with her though, so that's good.

Re: SIL was hurt by her bf...
There are a lot of volunteer agencies that your SIL can call to get some assistance. Safe Horizon is a reputable one that will be able to help her. and for your SIL

Re: SIL was hurt by her bf...
I hope the laws have gotten stricter since I was a victims advocate in NY. They used to have to apply for an order of protection but hopefully the arrest will put one in place automatically these days.
Many and for your SIL and family.

Re: SIL was hurt by her bf...
She would need to get a copy of the police report from when he was arrested. From there, she would talk to the DA's office (unless that has changed) and get the order of protection issued. Sadly, we all know how little protection they offer physically (in reality) but maybe it would help her emotionally and send a message to the guy to back off and get his act together. I'm very sorry this happened to her. I've been there and it really is a scary thing to deal with.

After she does this she should change the locks on her house and her numbers (cell and landline). The order of protection will only help her if she helps herself because it's nothing more than a document. If the bf does not oblige by it...which is a 50/50 chance...she needs to take extra precautions to protect herself. Moving is a drastic measure, but I know people who have done it in order to increase the distance between themselves and the abuser.
