Side yard?
does anyone have a side lot and have a side yard instead of a backyard? If so, what do you think? DH and I looked at a house with a side yard and we are not too crazy about it becaues it doesnt seem like there is much privacy. Any feedback would be appreciated!

My IL'S have both a large side yard and a backyard. They never use the side yard due to the lack of privacy. The backyard is very important to me and high on my list when looking at a house. That would probably be a deal breaker for me if there was no way to fence it in somehow.

Our side yard is much bigger than our backyard and it really hasn't been an issue for us. The only problem is that the yard work seems endless, since we can't "hide" the backyard and just concentrate on the front yard.
ETA: I should probably add that I live in a very quiet neighborhood with tons of trees, so I have a nice barrier between the neighbors and the street, so lack of privacy hasn't been a big issue.

Our side yard is more private than our back yard because the neighbors behind us have a deck and the other side yard is by that neighbor's driveway, and pool with a deck. Our house is sideways on the lot so the "back" of the house is really on the side. Unfortunately, it's the smallest side.

My friend recently bought a house with a very large side yard. They want to put in a pool so they are going to plant trees along the road for privacy.

We have a double lot and the house is only on one side of it so we have an average size back yard for our neighborhood and a full sized second plot that is our side yard. We are planting Giant Thuja bushes in the fall along the side walk to make it more private.
We really like our neighbors but they don't seem to realize that when we are in the side yard it's our yard not a park and that they shouldn't just come walking into it uninvited all the time.
Giant Thujas grow very fast, up to 3 feet per year, and are a dense privacy screen.

We have a big side yard too and privacy is something I keep thinking about once we build our deck. It is SO expensive to put a high fence around so I have no idea what to do.
