According to an interview she gave recently this is what she said:
“I don’t want to be famous or recognizable. I don’t want to be critiqued about the way that I look on the Internet. I was at Target the other day buying a hose and nobody recognized me and my song was on the radio. And I thought, ‘Okay, this experiment is working. I’ve been writing pop songs for pop stars for a couple years and see what their lives are like and that’s just not something I want.”

I dont think she feels that others should have cameras in their faces. I think she realizes it is part of the biz and a risk she and fellow performers have to take (which is horrible - how our society functions). Any of the others could have chosen to do what she has done.

I don't know, maybe I'm jaded but I've always felt her hiding her face is a gimmick, a marketing ploy to get people to talk about her and the album. Especially because as a PP mentioned, she used to show her face all the time and she's been a performer for many years now. If it's a marketing move, I think it's brilliant so I'm not judging. I actually love her and the album. Just not buying her explanation necessarily.

Why should she stay behind the scenes if she can sing like she sings? Those pop stars CHOOSE to sign away their lives, their privacy and so on... Im not saying its right what the paparazzi do, I think they are animals and there should be a law that protects people, BUT if Sia has found a way to stay incognito, yet do what she loves why should that make you like her less?
Shes more talented than half the pop stars that perform her songs, yet shes chosen to stay under the radar. It makes me like her more because shes not a fame whore.
ETA: She also hides during performances because she has EXTREME stage fright. Shes said that in an interview too. She also is extremely insecure about her looks. Again also mentioned during an interview.
