shower gift idea...

i have 2 showers coming up.... i was thinking of doing a basket of "all the things you need, but no one buys for you"

give me a list of things you would have wanted in such a basket....

i was thinking things like thermometers, Desitin, sippy cups, etc. Would also love some ideas for some sentimental things that you received that you actually used :)

Hmm, no sentimental ideas for you, but things I loved include:

teething ball

take along mobile

toy strap

paci clip

baby food storage jars


Something else that I want to do for my friends when they have kids is a first year holiday/seasons bib set. I know that a lot of people do the outfits, but I think that's always a hard call b/c you never know how big the baby will be. But bibs always fit!

some of the baskets i received at my showers were:

basket of books over 200 books (my SIL got them for DS)

basket of clothes
everything from newborn to 2T, about 50 or so outfits.... my friends mom bought it for me.

a really great basket was my diaper bag. it was filled with things i needed to fill a diaper bag, burp cloths, poop bags, wipes, extra clothing.

i got a bath basket with DS as well, it was an infant tub, with soaps, wash cloths, bath toys,

in my wishing well, i got alcohol, q-tips, shampoo, bath soap, wash clothes, bath toys, hair brushes, spoons, forks, plates, sippies, bottles, cleaning brushes, boogie wipes, saline, nasal suction, thermometer, socks, hats, bandaids, vicks.

The Vick's thermometer for babies - LOVE this one. It takes the temp very quickly and because of the way it's designed, even if you have a very squirmy baby, you can't ever accidentally insert it too far (a fear of mine once DS started moving around a lot).

I love my nipple brush much more than my bottle brush for cleaning bottles/nipples - its just easier for my small bottles (5oz) that he is using (but I have a preemie- maybe he is eating less longer than his peers?) the bottle brushes are too big to clean his bottles with so I use the nipple brush.

batteries - everything requires batteries and we got none at my shower lots and lots of batteries - look up items on registry and batteries they require

sanitizing microwave steam bags

nursing pads

safety things for plugs and cabinets

laundry detergent for baby clothes

edited to add: I remember having an annual birthday candle that we burned every year. I didn;t get one for my baby - I have to! I loved this growing up.

Some sentimental ideas:

I got a few little ceramic containers for DS's first lock of hair, first tooth.

Picture frames. Can never have too many pictures of baby.

2 clay handprint kits, to make a mold of a hand and a foot. I bought these myself and have them hanging in his room. Made them at 11 days old and I still compare my DS's hands to it to see how much he's grown.

We got money from a family friend and was told to use it towards baby's first photo shoot. Not really a basket idea but figured I'd throw it in.

And my mom got me two sweat outfits for after baby. It was sweet to get something for *me* and not just baby at the shower.

I actually did this for a friend's shower recently. I wrote a little blurb, and a few friends split it up and read it at her shower.

Dear Mom-to-be,

We know you'll be a busy bee (Burt's Bee's shampoo), and taking care of a baby can wipe (baby wipes) you out. But don't do anything rash (diaper cream), like hitting the bottle (Dr. Brown's) or taking a pill (teething tablets) when the going gets tough. It's ok - All parents get rattled (baby rattle) once in awhile. Give us a ring (teething ring). We'll remind you that we think you're the world's greatest mom (bear or tshirt).

One key (teething keys) thing to remember is to try and pacify (binkies) {Dad's name} gripes (gripe water). Jump into the sack (sleep sack) with him, and give him a massage (baby lotion). Or you could just cuddle - we know he loves it when you're the little spoon (feeding spoons).

When you have the time, wrap up your little Q-T pie (safety swabs) and come meet us for a bowl (feeding bowls) of soup of a cup (sippy cup) of coffee! We'd all love to meet the little doll (baby doll).

DD had some tummy troubles, I wish I had gotten Gripe Water, Gas drops, etc.

Maybe some alcohol swabs for belly button? Breast pads (who wants to spend the money on those?)...

My favorite "sentimental" gift....was the book, "If I Could Keep You Little". LOVE that book!
