Should we move to a cashless society?
I hate not having any cash on me. I always make sure I have emergency money on me, especially when I commute to the city for work. Having no cash during that big blackout was such a traumatizing experience for me and I always want to be prepared God forbid something like that happens again.

Can I tell you how much money I have saved by using my Target red credit card? I had no desire for yet another credit card, and I never take dept store credit cards, but not having the Target Red card is just silly and a waste of money to me.
It's money in your pocket. 5% off your entire purchase right at the register. Money for nothing. I love seeing the total drop from $100 to $95 as soon as I put the card in. Plus free shipping all the time on the Target website.
I never ever ever in my life carry a balance so I just use the card, get my discount, and pay the bill at the end of the month- interest etc is not an issue. It's all good, no bad. Money for free Can't do that with a cash payment
Target is my weakness but I have the debit card instead. So it's like using cash plus all the same perks of the CC! I hope it never changes! I use cash a lot. It helps keep the CC under control.
Debit cards are still "cashless". It's a plastic card with an account number that you use to buy stuff. If we did go totally cashless, there would be many more ways of using electronic methods of buying stuff. Google Wallet, PayPal, Bitcoin, Credit Cards, Debit Cards, AppleWallet, etc.
That would give people the flexibility of handling their money as they want. Debit cards would closely resemble cash, where if you don't have the funds, you can't spend them.
If this hypothetical scenario did happen, of course several things would change. There wouldn't be "cash-only" places, there wouldn't be discounts for cash, BitCoin or something similar would be more popular for people who didn't want anyone tracking what they are spending. This type of thing happens whenever there is a fundamental change in how we do things.

I try to never use cash unless it's to pay the babysitter or housekeeper. I would prefer to move to a cashless society but I am sure a lot of small business owners would not be too keen on the idea!
Definitely would be a problem for a lot of "off the books" businesses. All the more reason you would think the government would want to move away from cash!
I would like everything to accept cards but I would feel uneasy about having all my money computerized.
But its ironic because I hardly ever have cash, so if the systems were to get hacked, I would still be effected.

Re: Should we move to a cashless society?
In some countries in Europe (ie: Cyprus) when the economy went belly up, they started taking money out of people's bank accounts. Think that could never happen here? Not so sure. So NO, I would not want a cashless society.

Should we move to a cashless society?
YES. I hate cash with a burning passion. I had to give $5 at work today for a gift and another (around my age) girl didn't have any cash and had to trek down to the ATM. Everyone in my office seemed almost frustrated with us for not having cash and I want to yell "You're the weirdos, no on uses cash anymore!!!!"

For the most part, you can't track cash. Want to remain discreet? Cash. Want to make money on the side? Cash. Want a discount? Cash.
Everything digital is traceable. I don't necessarily want every single move I make stored away in some database. Not because I'm doing anything wrong but it's just the principle of it.

Re: Should we move to a cashless society?
No way!
I don't have/use any credit cards and I rarely use my debit card. I don't like the idea that "big brother" can track my purchases. I'm not "hiding" anything, but why does anyone need to know my business? I'm SO sick of the transparency of our society.
Also, as we all saw during Sandy, in the event of a mass power outage, cards are useless.

I agree. There are so many benefits to cash and I always like having at least a little bit on me at all times.
What about those in poverty who don't have smart phones or credit cards? Maybe for the middle and upper class it's not as necessary but for many, cash will remain essential.
