Should I be upset? re ped
DD just had a cherry pit stuck up her nose. Why she put it there only god know! luckily after an hour we got it out.
In the middle of all this I call our Ped. the receptionist says hold on he's still here. She comes back on and says that the dr. said to try to get her to blow it out (thanks einstein!) or go the the ER. I said he can't see her and try to get it out? She said no.
Now i'm home alone with 3 kids (a newborn and a 2 year old plus the 5YO with a pit up her nose). DH is in Brooklyn working and it would take at least 2 hours for him to get home. Dr. knows all of this. He never got on the phone, he never called me back to see what happened.
I'm fuming, but I realize I'm emotional right now. I want to rip his head off right now but maybe I'm just in the moment. Would you be upset? I'm ready to change doctors.

I wouldn't be upset because there was probably not much he can do for her in the office. My niece got a popcorn kernel stuck up her nose and had to go to the ER where a pediatric ENT had to remove it.
Glad you were able to get it out!

The more I think about it the more I think he could have at least got on the phone himself or called me back to see how she was.
Even if he couldn't do anything at the office, which is hard to believe because I ended up getting it out at home with an ear wax remover stick, he could have called.
I think I'm going to switch doctors.

When DD had a pebble up her nose we just happened to have a well child visit that day. The ped just had her blow her nose really hard and it came out. She was surprised and said normally she has to send to a pediatric ENT. He gave you advice IMO he was probably busy and its not a crazy emergency ya know? I Wouldn't switch over it.

I wouldn't be upset. One Dr can't see everyone for every occasion. He might be able to see you this time but next time he might have you go to the ER.
It happens. If there were other issues I'd think about switching but no for one thing.

I would at least expect him to get on phone. We just switched our peds b/c ours was so laid back & failed to see the urgency in a couple of different issues that concerned me. We had some other issues w/ never seeing the same dr. & decided to change. Go w/ your gut.

That would annoy me if he didn't at least get on the phone. I would say that to him at the next visit but I don't think I would change if I was overall happy with the practice.

I wouldnt change just for this one episode. I am not surprised they would tell you to go to the er though since objects up nose can potentially quickly turn into objects pushed into the sinuses or occluded airways when manipulated. It would have been nice if they took a quick peek at least but if they were too busy it would not have been fair to ask you come come later or for an evening appointment only to find you have to go to the er anyways.

I would not switch doctors over it. Doctors have to prioritize.
I have been on opposite ends of the spectrum. DS had heart surgery and our ped used to check up on us daily, insisted we get a ped nurse visit us at our home, made sure we were connected directly to her if we had an issue, would visit DS in the hospital when she got off work, etc.
I have also felt completely neglected and blown off when DS had eczema problems. Being itchy is not a real emergency to them. I've rushed DS to PM Pediatrics in panic mode for the doc on staff to simply give DS some benadryl.
DH isn't a ped but he is ortho. When he is on call, he often tells the patient to go to the ER if they cannot wait to make an appointment.

thanks for all the opinions. I'm less emotional this morning but I'm still upset he didn't call or get on the phone. Not sure if I'll look to switch. I'm not "in love" with the practice, but haven't had any real problems with them.
I just want that dream doctor we all want for our kids! Someone who cares, shows concern, understands a panicky mom etc. My OBGYN is like this and I'm spoiled b/c I've never found another doctor like this in other areas (dentist, ped., MD etc.)

he probably doesn't have all the necessary instruments to try to remove it and wanted to save you the copay for just watching her try to blow her nose in his office.... I think you're expecting too much. If the Drs called back and checked on all of their patients they wouldn't really have time for much else. I'm sure if it was a life threatening situation they would've called
