Shenandoah national park?
Has anyone ever been? We're thinking of going for a few days in August.
Also, ds is still young, so any ideas of where to stop for a night on the way down/back?

I went to hike Old Rag but that wouldn't be a good choice with kids, though there are a lot of kid friendly hikes, I can't give you specifics.
Depending on how you go, Hershey is on the way.

Re: Shenandoah national park?
We have been there MANY times. It's one of our favorite vacation spots! We were there before DC and after (when DC was only 7 months old and several times since then). I'd be happy to help you! We have several trail books and have been to many of the programs they offer. Feel free to FM me with specific questions.

It's absolutely beautiful there. Definitely make time to sky gaze late at night. I went before kids, so no specific tips with kids. The hotel on premises is a little "roughing it". We had to change our reservations from 3 nights to 2 because I was getting very anxious there. Bugs, critters....
