going to try to get a better routine over the break from work next week. she's 4.5 months and sleeps pretty well, but has trouble falling asleep without us holding her and going back to sleep on her own.

I did CIO when my DS was around 6 months. It helped A LOT. He sttn from 6-8 months and then he got sick and regressed for about a month. Then I did CIO again and he was good from 9-11 months and then he got sick again. The pattern has continued until today. At 21 months, he is still not a good sleeper, but he is definitely better than he was.
I think 4.5 months might be a little young for sleep training - I know at that age my DS still needed to nurse in the middle of the night. His worse sleep occurred from 4-6 months. I think this is because nursing alone was not satisfying him so he had to nurse all night to get enough food. I was exhausted - pretty much a walking zombie since I was getting 3-4 hours of broken sleep a night.
I think the most important thing to do at this age is to try to get rid of sleep crutches. I nursed my DS to sleep every single night until he was a year old. Once I got rid of this crutch, he started sleeping through the night more often. Try putting her in her bed and gently rubbing or tapping her back. As time goes on, do it for a shorter period of time. If she can fall asleep on her own, she will know how to fall back to sleep when she wakes up in the middle of the night.

Re: share your sleep training success
ok this is good to know then.
i dont need to nurse her. she will fall asleep but the poor thing fights it so bad. so we hold her, rock her, lay with her, etc.
she gets a good stretch..depending on the night it could be 4,5,6,7,8 hours. it varies so much so im wondering if i should try something different. she never wakes up crying for food. just wakes up and cant go back down. i do end up feeding her but its usually a really short feeding, so i probably dont even need to.

I had the same issue with DS where he had to be rocked to sleep - sometimes it would take him us over an hour. I read Sleep Sense and it helped tremendously! I will see if I can find the link and FM it to you. It's a quick/easy read.
