Severe temper tantrums

I am mostly a lurker, but need as much advice as I can get at this point. My son has temper tantrums, not the "I didn't get what I want kind" where it's a cry fit and over, he has full blown out thrashing bang his head into the floor hit scream for HOURS, dangerous type. They seem to come for reasons and most recently for no reason at all. We have tried it all. Ignoring, putting him a safe place, we do not give in, but NOTHING seems to work. I am beginning to fear it's more than just a tantrum, and not sure what I should do next. He's 2, very close to three. he's not out first, but we have not ever seen anything Ike this with our others. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Severe temper tantrums

i would talk to your pediatrician. it could be sensory related.

a coworker of mine, her son is autistic and bipolar ..he's now 12 I think. I remember her telling me stories about what she went through early on. He would have violent fits from something setting him off like a cab driver talking too loudly, or injuring a finger.

and im totally not implying that your child has these conditions, but it could be a sensory thing where he is perceiving stuff so differently than we do that its causing these outbursts.

maybe start keeping a journal of when he has them and what was going on at the time. b/c it seems like its a little bit beyond a terrible 2's or 3's tantrum.

Severe temper tantrums

My sister was like this when she was little. She would scream for HOURS, bang her head, destroy things. It was almost every day from the time she was around 2.5 until she was 4. She would have them occasionally after that until she was over 6. My mom would put her in her room (no toys in the room, just a bed and a dresser anchored to the wall). There was nothing else to do. You couldn't comfort her, reason with her, or anything. This was over 20 years ago, so they didn't have the awareness of the things we do now, but I truly believe she had some kind of sensory disorder. Still as an adult, she is very easily overwhelmed, and gets anxious and extremely angry very quickly. Definitely talk to your pediatrician. It never hurts to get a professional opinion.
