second hand smoke? updated in original

update! we were able to find a bar that is smoke free and will be going there Chat Icon

now I just have to master the art of fake-drinking Chat Icon

update 2: ugh, our friends still want to go to a non-smoke-free bar Chat Icon but said it's "not that smoky" and we can leave if it is. oh well, hopefully it's not too bad

Re: second hand smoke?

I would just avoid the bars. I wouldn't think to go into a bar pregnant. I'm sure your friend will question you when you aren't drinking no?

Re: second hand smoke?

Like anythig else, it's prolonged exposure to something -
ONE night out in a smoky bar (while disgusting) isn't a deal breaker IMO -
I took my Mom to AC for her birthday a few weekends ago - Smoky casino and all ...........My asthma hated me for it - but it was only one night.

I've gone into plenty of bars while PG, and VERY PG at that - just b/c you can't drink doesn't mean you can't hang out w/ your friends !!

Is it that bad to go to a bar pregnant? is it a safety concern? I'm only 5 weeks and dont look pregnant, and haven't seen some of these college friends since our wedding a few years ago. I'm perfectly fine with fake-drinking or not drinking at all, but will stay home if it's best for the baby.

I just went to a holiday party at a bar. I wouldn't go there just DH and I, but if there's a social gathering I don't see what the problem is. I don't want to feel left out and sitting around at home.

No, it's not bad to go to a bar pregnant. Go, enjoy yourself, and explain that you are the designated driver for the night so that no one asks questions! Chat Icon

I'd go. I wouldn't worry too much about one night out at a smoky bar. I've been out to bars in NY several times since being pregnant for birthday parties etc. I'd also use the designated driver. If you are feeling good, go have fun!

ITA. Exposure to second hand smoke once is not going to do harm. Also, nothing wrong with going to a bar pregnant as long as you are not downing shots Chat Icon

Re: second hand smoke?

I don't think it is going to do any harm, just for one night...but if you are sensitive to any smells....it won't be fun.

But if you aren't...have fun!! Chat Icon

I honestly don't see anything wrong with going to a bar pregnant--obviously depending on the bar. I wouldn't go to a club where you might be slammed into or something, but most places would be fine. I would not worry about it at all.

I would totally go. You are not going to be in the bar for days, it's just a few hours

Re: second hand smoke?

I would totally go too. . and if it feels too smoky you can always leave early. .

I wouldn't miss out on friends just bc it was in a bar - and I agree just tell them you're the DD - or I actually gave up drinking for a long time bc I had really bad acid reflux and my doc told me to cut out the booze (feel free to steal that one - it was technically something called LPR )

Re: second hand smoke?

thanks everyone. We don't actually have firm plans yet so I told my DH that I do want to catch up with our friends but to try to push for a house-party v. a bar and warned that depending on which bar it is I may not go or might want to leave early.
