Seatbelts

Do you wear them?

We may have covered this topic before but there's a reason why I ask.

With what my bro is going through and the type of rehab that he will go through I was thinking about the brain injuries people sustain when they are in serious car accidents..some don't wear seatbelts..

This is not a lecture..and you certainly don't have to respond to this thread, but if you don't regularly wear them front or back, please consider doing so.

Today I saw a woman with a dog on her lap while driving. All it takes is for her to hit someone and the airbags deploy, the dog is toast and she suffocates. Awful..I was just thinking about the what ifs.

Maybe I'm ultra sensitive to the situation but it can happen in an instant and everything in your life will change.

Wear them, take care when driving and don't have any distractions when driving.

That's all...carry on.Chat Icon

I ALWAYS wear my seatbelt

and when I'm driving, EVERYONE in the car MUST be wearing their seatbelts, or else the car doesn't move an inch.

Re: Seatbelts

I ALWAYS ALWAYS wear my seatbelt. Not only is it a habit, but my car makes an annoying beeping noise if you even drive 3 inches without it on. Yet I see people driving new cars that must have this feature also, and I don't know how they can tolerate listening to the beeping over something so simple as putting on your seatbelt.

I have actually been paying attn to this a lot lately during my commute to work. I see mostly young-ish girls not wearing their seatbelts. In all kinds of cars, crappy old jalopies and gigantic brand-new SUVs....I don't know why it seems like young girls do it the most, but it's what I've noticed and it just seems so STUPID to me!

I'm with ya. I don't even start the car before I have my seatbelt on. Too much can happen too quickly, and it's such an easy way to avoid an unnecesarry risk.

Re: Seatbelts

I have to admit that I only wear my seatbelt in the front seat. Basically because I get very car sick in the back of the car, and the seatbelt seems to irrate the car sickness. So to easily solve this problem, I only sit in the front of the car.

Absolutely. And I harass DH until he wears his! I even got my 3 year old to tell daddy he can't drive with him if he doesn't wear it.

Re: Seatbelts

I ALWAYS wear mine...NOW

I was involved in a bad car accident in 1993, where I was a passenger with no seatbelt on...My face smashed into the windshield and my mouth hit the dashboard. I am lucky I did not go THROUGH it...

Now, my car does not move an inch unless everyone in it is buckled up.

Sh!tty way to learn the lesson, but thankful to be alive

Exactly. Everyone in my car buckles up and if they don't want to, they can drive themself in their own car.

Re: Seatbelts

I always wear a seatbelt; it's just habit!

But, I am the same about helmets when riding a bike. They are so important. I used to do therapy with TBI adults and one man, who always sticks in my head, was hit by a car (not wearing a helmet-this was in the early 80's). He's lucky to be alive!

A neurosurgeon's son was hit by a car and he had a helmet on. He was absolutely fine but his helmet cracked. Thank goodness he was wearing it or it would've been his head!

Sorry, off track......

Re: Seatbelts

I always do, no matter what - my father was the seatbelt nazi growing up. He wouldn't start the car until everyone inside had their seatbelt on. Thankfully, he taught me well, because when I was 18 I got into a horrific car accident in Queens - someone hit the driver's side of my car, going about 50mph, and my car flipped 3 times and ended up upside down.

I walked away from that accident without a scratch - the only injury was a huge bruise running along my chest up to my collarbone, from the seatbelt holding me as I was suspended in the air.

My father went to see the car after the accident, and it was the first and last time I ever saw him cry. Chat Icon

An accident investigator, for the insurance company, investigated everything, and at the end, came up to me, and told me that if I hadn't been wearing my seatbelt, I would have died. Literally, the entire car crumpled, except for my seat.

I brought this up a few weeks ago on these boards, asking why people think it's ok to wear one in the front seat, but not the back, and I got flamed slightly, but I don't care - I agree with you - it's a really, really important issue.

Re: Seatbelts

ALWAYS. The only time I do not is when I am driving an old car (one of the classics) where they were not adjustable & can do more harm than good. Other than that I always wear a seatbelt....even if I sit in the back.

Re: Seatbelts

I always wear my seatbelt. I want to set an example for my children. DH's car has a terrific feature where it "beeps" if the driver or passenger is not wearing their belt.

Re: Seatbelts

We always wear them - In my subaru who ever is sitting in the front must wear them, or you will keep hearing Beep beep beep

In my 1966 Beetle the car didnt come with Seat Belts, but I ordered Shoulder 3 pt belts for the car and I will have them installed when I bring the car in to the VW mechanic to have the rest of the work done on it
