School question
My DS is in a 3 year old program. He came home today and told me he was put in the time out chair….I emailed the teacher and I'm waiting for a response. At this age- i dont know if he's telling me the truth, or if another kid was put in time out and he's just telling me….
Would you expect the teacher to tell you at dismissal if this was the case?

Re: School question
I have never heard of a time out chair in school. Especially at that age, but since my boys have been in school it was never the case. My oldest is only 5 and in kindergarten, but he's been in daycare since 12 weeks old. I would definitely confirm it with the teacher.
I would think at that age they first get spoken to first time they are no good and then if it gets worse then they go to the main office to have the director or principal deal with it.

Re: School question
We recently transitioned our child to a school setting as opposed to daycare (4 year old Pre-K).... Daycare used to tell us EVERYTHING....we also had 24/7 camera access to view what he was doing. Now while he was in school....we were not being given any information as to how his day was, behavior wise or other. DS would always tell us "I had a great day"...but then we would find out later that it wasn't such a great day.
As a result, we started a communication book with his teacher. She writes a sentence or two in the book as to how his day was so that we are aware and can reinforce any issues at home...
As for a single time out....if it was something "serious"- hitting another child, throwing stuff, etc I would think that they would tell you.... If it was just because he was not listening at a specific time, I would think a time out was relatively routine and wouldn't expect the teacher to tell me about every single time....
Do they give you any written feedback?

Re: School question
my DS is almost 4 and in a nursery program 2 AMs a week. there was once or twice when he was put in time out.... and the teacher always told me at pick up, or called me at home later that afternoon to talk to me about things. BUT then again I know the teachers have so much going on with all the kids. so the teacher might have even forgotten that he was put in time out! so definitely talk to her, see what she says and make sure she knows you want to know about stuff like this so you can stay on top of it.

School question
When I worked at tutor time we were not allowed to put a child in time out. We had to re-direct them, and if they continued with the bad behavior they were taken for a walk to the directors office.

no, I would not expect a call home for a one time instance in time out. I feel like if a problem arises in the class the teacher handles it. If she didn't think it was enough of an issue to tell the parents about - it probably wasnt. My dd is in K now and tells me everyday who got on yellow and red _ those are the warnings before the teacher call home. I think if a teacher had to call every parent of the kids that got those warnings or time out - it would be a lot.

Daycare never told me if DS got a time out - but, DS would tell us as soon as we picked him up (it only happened once or twice).

I have a third grader and a DS in preschool, and I feel that I trust the teachers to run their classroom the best way they see fit. Unless punishment becomes frequent or a real issue, I don't need to know everything little thing.

Re: School question
My son was given a time out once for climbing furniture. The teacher told me but only because I saw her at dismissal and asked how his day was. There was no note or anything. I think it's fine. If anything I appreciate not having to be privy to all the details. I trust that I would be notified for a major behavioral problem, and I appreciate anything that reinforces general rules of conduct and contributes to them respecting authority.
