School for 1 year old?

My mom watches my son Jack who is almost a year old, so there is no need for pre-school/daycare. I assumed I would eventually enroll him in some kind of pre-K classes when he was 4 maybe, then kindergarden at 5.

Is this the norm or should I be enrolling him is something sooner? We do a Little Gym class once a week for social interaction but I'm more concerned with his learning and being behind once he enters public school.

Any advice would be great.

Re: School for 1 year old?

I am not putting dd into school until prek I feel they can learn just as much at home as they do in daycare. If you have a great person watching them then you do not have to worry about dc being behind I feel that they will catch up just as fast as any other child.

Re: School for 1 year old?

DD has been home with a nanny since 3 months and is now almost 15 months. She will be starting preschool at 21 months. She is only going 9 hours a week...MWF 930-1230. I felt that although she plays with other kids daily at our local parks and has play dates...I know she is the type of child that craves that social interactivity. Since our DC #2 is coming late May, this will also give her time to grow a little more independent and allow her time away from the baby.

So for me it wasn't so much for the educational component. Our nanny was a montessori teacher and daycare teacher so I know she is learning at a typical pace...it was more the social and independent factors.

Woops, just realized I posted this on "pregnancy" and not "parenting". I guess there is a lot of overlap. Thanks for the responses.

Re: School for 1 year old?

We are enrolling DS in a 2's club in the fall- he'll be 2 1/2. It's only for 1.5 hours 2 days a week. It looks like such a great program, I'm excited about it. He's home with a nanny and she takes him to library classes, but this will be something he does on his own which I think is important.

I think that is fine ~ I only put DS in preschool @ 3 to make some friends and have some social interaction ~ I used to bring him to a lot of library stuff then we moved and it is hard to get into the classes but the time I get there they are booked and we are on a wait list uggghhh.

Re: School for 1 year old?

I'm starting DS in school this september. He will be 3.5. He will go Tue/Thur 930-12. My MIL has been watching him since he has been 6 months and I went back to work full-time. I think he needs more social interactions. I also want to get him used to a classroom setting and to learn to listen and follow directions from someone other then mom or dad. Also, he has been asking to go to school lately.
He will go to Pre-K the following year and that will be 3 days a week.
