Saving parking spots

With all the snow we're getting lately, street parking is hard to come by.

Would you try to save a parking spot in front of your home by planting a chair or something else in the middle of it?

No joke, someone on my street did this! It was a little kids beach chair. DH wanted to fling it.

No, you don't own the spot just because you have a car. I know how frustrating it can be. I've been there!

My mom's house is the only one on her block that doesn't have a driveway, so her neighbors told her to keep her garbage can in her spot while she's at work and a couple of them keep an eye out to ask people to move if they park there. She was nervous about how people would react at first but nobody's complained and several neighbors have taken turns helping her dig her spot out.

I live in an area with a lot of 3-4 story apt buildings. It would be nice if I dug out my car, drove off and when I came back, the spot was till there...however, I do not expect it to still be there. I thought about putting something in the spot like traffic cones, but you know what, it's just not fair. If I saw a beach chair sitting in an empty spot, I would assume it was debris and either throw it in the trash or drive over it. This is NYC, unfortunately nothing is sacred...

Ch 2 news did a segment on this last week - I had no idea it was a "thing" and is pretty widely practiced.

I don't care either way, I get how annoying it is to clear a spot and then not get to use it, but sometimes you gotta take any spot you can with all this f'ing snow.

I saw this one the news the other day. Alot of people do this and it's a matter of respecting one another. If you dig out a space for your car I see nothing wrong with plopping a garbage can there to save the space...

I think it's rude.

I think if you leave a spot that doesn't mean it's your spot and it belongs to you.

Just because you dig the spot out or because spots are hard to come by, doesn't mean you own them.

That's like saving a seat on the bus for someone. Or getting up and coming back hours later only to say "hey that was my seat"... yea.. it WAS, you left and now it's not anymore.

With that being said... during the blizzard I witnessed a jerk who lives across the street from me.... move his car which was in an un shoveled spot...he came outside to walk his dog when the the car behind his car left to go to work. Jerk goes inside, leaves dog and gets shovel. he proceeds to shovel only the back of his car (and barely at that) so he could back up into the shoveled spot behind it. he said he was on vacation that week and was staying in. So then why the need to take the shoveled spot and leave your old spot all full of snow??? I found that to be incredibly rude and selfish. I now have such a low opinion of his character.

It would be nice if people thought of others before them-self.

Flame away but with the j*rks that I have for neighbors I am saving my spot (only during these nasty storms). The house to my left and the house to my right each have 5 cars and all year long they move their cars around so that they take up spots all on the street and leave their driveway open so that none of them need to park on the the service road.

So if they can do that all year long, I am making sure the spot that I dug out myself is still there. And we have two cars, the 2nd is always parked on ther service road out of the way.

in my neighborhood its common to save spots... luckily i live in an area where there are less houses because of the library and a park so we have more parking available to us...

with or without the snow its a given that the spot in front of your house is yours...

I could never get away with this where I live. On a regular day I have to circle for a spot. When it snows everyone knows if you dig out and leave your spot is fair game. If someone put something in the spot I know all the neighbors would be out ******** about it. No one dares to do this!

we have street parking, and considering half my neighbors couldnt properly shovel their car out, I would be ****** if one of them decided to put a cone or chair in one of the spots that were cleaned out.

I'm originally from Boston, and this is common practice there. I was just up there this weekend and laughed at all the chairs/tables/garbage cans/cones etc that were in all the spots because i'd forgotten how accepted it is up there!

It's rarer here, but you still see it

i understand the thinking behind it but i don't necessarily think its fair either way..

I used to live in Queens, and once someone took MY trash can and used it to save a space.

It wasn't winter. Needless to say, I took my can AND the spot.

Anyway, I can see why people would do it, but I don't know that I'd do it myself. I think it can be perceived as rude, depending on the situation.

Wrong on every level. I don't care if you dug it out or not.

I would have no problems moving somebody's chair, garbage can, whatever, to park.

I grew up in NE Queens. it really sux to dig out a spot, just to have someone take it 2 min. after you leave, but you can't save spots. people do it but you are not supposed to. I personally would not park there, but people move cones and garbage cans to take the spots.

Since the blizzard this has been an ongoing issue in my area. It has caused fights, and it's getting out of control. People are putting cones, cans, chairs, and buckets to save spots.
