stairs are easy to do yourself.....I hired someone to do floors in an apt but that was so long ago I dont think Id ever find the name. I am in the process of doing my stairs myself. Not to bad at all....just the timing of letting it dry....stain or poly first thing in the morning and then let dry all day.

Allison,
What steps did you follow with sanding the stairs? They are brand new oak stairs, but they have been through hell with all of the sub contractors walking on them. They are also covered in spackle, and paint. When the guy that built the stairs sees them, he will not be happy lol

I can show you mine when you pick up the radio. Mine were new so I didnt have to sand but we tried to salvage the old ones and I used a hand sander which will take off all the paint and stuff.....if there is a lot of "junk" on them start with a gritty paper and then work to a finer paper. Then stain.....then light sand then poly....

Really a hand sander....I wonder if that will work for my stairs. If I can do them myself, I would really like to. Saving the money would be really good.....

Did you start with a medium grit sand paper?

I dont remember what we started with but it was probably around an 80.....but I would err on the finer side cause you can always go back to a med if its too fine. I think we ended with 220
