Sanders vs Clinton

I'm a Democrat so I'm definitely going to vote for whoever gets the nomination, but I'm wondering about the chances of either candidate.

At first I was fine with Clinton - didn't think negatively about her, even though I wasn't a rah rah supporter of hers. But recently, I've been leaning more toward liking what Sanders is saying (and it's not helping that Clinton has been coming across as pandering and saying things that make her look out of touch with middle class).

However, I'm afraid of Sander's chance of winning against the Republican if he gets the nomination. Will Republicans come out in droves to vote against the socialist (like it's a bad word Chat Icon ) even if they're not thrilled with their nominee (Trump/Cruz)?

I really just want to have the best chance of winning the election and I honestly don't know which one is going to 1) rally the troops to vote or 2) show up just to vote against the other person.

Additionally, I'm concerned that if Clinton wins the nomination, that Sanders will run as Independent and take too many votes away from Clinton - which will result in Trump/Cruz winning.

Funny cause I know a ton of republicans here in Red State of Texas who will gladly vote for Sanders just to NOT have Cruz.

Ya know.. Cruz.. the guy FROM OUR STATE?

Nut job!

Honestly if Sanders doesn't win the nomination I will vote Hillary just because I can't stand Trump or Cruz that much. I don't like any of Trump's policies and he hasn't proven that he can stand by what he says .

I support Sanders but still think Clinton will get the nomination. But there have been polls which have Sanders beating Republicans too.

I do not see Bernie running third party. Trump is another story though- I could definitely believe he will run as an independent if he does not get nominated. More and more I think the Republicans will pull a fast one and nominate Paul Ryan. So maybe it will be a 3 way between Ryan, Trump and Clinton.

Re: Sanders vs Clinton

I'll be honest, i don't follow politics.
I am more of a democrat than a republican, thought I have views which fit in both political parties. DH wants Sanders, he does not Hilary. Being a woman, I would love a woman President, but not sure if Hilary can cut it.

HOWEVER, I took a look at the NY primaries poll and the outlook is scary. It looks like the democrats are divided between Hilary and Bernie, and the republicans have pretty much decided on Trump. From that poll (which i realize is a tiny size) it looks like Trump might win just because the democrats can't decide! Scary scary thought.

I hope that whoever wins the democratic primaries, the democrats can put their differences aside and vote for them just to make sure Trump does not win. A split vote if Bernie runs independent can lead to a Republican win.

Yes ITA. I have a feeling the Republicans will end up nominating Ryan.

I can't see that happening. If trump God Forbid becomes the republican nominee I think either Clinton or Sanders is likely to beat him. Can you imagine a debate between trump and either Clinton or sanders? They will both mop the floor with him. He has no experience or qualifications that would make him a good president IMO! I think most democrats will get in line with who ever is nominated and I honestly can't see most independents would vote for trump.

Because of that fear, you can confidently vote for Sanders! He consistently beats all republicans and by much larger margins than hillary. She does not beat Kasich, where Sanders' average poll performance has him winning against Kasich. This is actually one of the reasons I am voting for Sanders!

There is no need to apologize for your opinion.

Why are you liking him less? I just presented some polling data about their electability, so I'm not following.

You are right, I am going slightly off-topic from the OP, but I'm kind of keeping in line with the title.

I don't think these polls really mean anything just yet. You never really know what is going to happen. I think 538 said something like that. In addition, Democrats will gather behind the nominated candidate. This is not the case with the Republicans. If Trump gets the nomination (*shudder*), I don't see a large part of Republicans voting for him.

If Bernie does get nominated, I will vote for him. However, I feel he is too idealistic and what he wants won't really work. I do like his single-payer health care and I think that works. As for free tuition across the board-- it will not work. Fees need to be lowered, but you cannot eliminate them completely. I also don't like his foreign policy and a few other things.

But I felt that way from the beginning. I read this opinion piece the other day and it kind of summed up my feelings on why I like him less.

Agreed . Whatever my personal opinion of Hilary may be I do feel she will run the country better than he will, he has a lot of great ideas but I don't think he will be able to get them done and I don't think he knows much about foreign policy which just won't work IMO

Re: Sanders vs Clinton

It is possible but very unlikely that an Independent will run at this point. This article outlines the difficulties:
http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/04/how-a-third-party-presidential-bid-could-still-happen/477021/

I also don't think Bernie will run as an independent. He said he wouldn't, and whatever else you think about Bernie, he is very consistent (standing up for gay rights in 1970s! Anti-trade deals in the 1980s!).

I understand the people who argue that Sanders' ideas will never happen. You are probably right; Obama's much less extreme ideas were mostly unrealized as well. What I will say is that if Bernie pursues something, he may not get 100% of what he wants, but he very likely will get us closer to that goal (i.e., no free college, but cap on tuition increases, etc). Also, if Bernie is elected, his admittedly weak ties to the Democratic party become mainly an asset. So many people, including me, are so sick of the parties. Both Sanders and Trump are really independents, and I think that is one of the reasons they are getting so much support.

I will vote for Clinton in the general, but I changed my party affiliation to Democrat so I can vote for Bernie in the primary (I am in PA now, so we vote April 26). Sanders is the first politician that strongly actually makes me believe he will try to unite us; others say it without any fervor or honesty. Sanders has been fighting for human rights his entire career. To me, human rights must be the priority over anything else, and Sanders has a sterling record.

Also, Sanders has an uncanny knack of being consistently ahead of his peers in terms of defending many rights. This is just a blog, but it gives a nice overview of all the times Bernie has been on the right side of an issue before other politicians (and sometimes Americans) have gotten there:
http://tysongibb.net/?p=441

This includes trade, women's rights, climate change, war, the economy, trade, etc. This demonstrates a man who sticks to what he believes in, and what many Americans have come to believe in, albeit later.

Sorry so long. To recap: Yay Sanders! Okay, Hilary.

I understand too. And as much as I support Sanders (and I started following his Facebook page a very long time ago, way before there was any hint of his interest in the Presidency) I also know his ideas are not realistic. But of all the candidates, I feel he is the one who has the best interests of the middle class at heart. I believe he cares about people and his record shows it. I think Trump and Cruz want power, and Kasich to some extent I think does care about people but I do not agree with his views. And I do think Hillary does care about people but she is beholden to Wall St and I think they will always be a priority.

Yes! i am not a fan of Hilary, but I think Bernies tax increases are too extreme and many of his ideas aren't plausible given our current spending on military (yes, other countries have better healthcare, leave policies and free higher education, but they don't spend over 50 percent of their budget on military. Something has to give). Sanders' tax increases on investment portfolio income would really hurt my family, but I just can't support Hilary. And as much as I think Congress would make things hard onSanders, I think Hilary would have it worse. The hatred I hear from Republicans for Hilary is astonishing. I imagine if she won, RepublicanCongress would be afraid to cooperate with her at all, in fear of what their constituents would think

Would it still be a Republican Congrees if enough Dems showed up to vote them out? I'm not sure how many are them have terms ending this year.
