Re: Sad, the thought of two in daycare seems impossible
Yeah... I am having this issue right now. Any money I would make from working would pretty much go straight to child care. I would be working to pay day care/baby sitter. We are thinking of selling our house and moving. The latest raise of fares with the LIRR was the straw the broke the camel's back. Its really depressing.

Re: Sad, the thought of two in daycare seems impossible
We are thinkng about trying for #2 - DS is 13 months now. Daycare is $300/week. It is painful to think about paying $2400/month on daycare. What other choice do we have? when i speak to my friends/family that don't pay for daycare b/c they have family watching and they start complaining about finances, I tell them that they should be rolling around in the money - by the time my DS goes to kindergarten I will have paid about $60,000 on daycare - just for him.

I am SO lucky. I have a great nanny/babysitter who charges me $8 an hour. She is great with my kids and they seem to love her. She is an early ed major who had to drop out of school because she got cervical cancer but is better now! She has been with me about 1.5 months but so far so good

I know - I'm not looking forward to this when the time comes. I may explore a nanny but quite honestly, I still prefer a daycare facility for the interaction and checks & balances of a center system. But, the way I look at it - 2 in daycare is a temporary thing - it'll suck for a while, but evenutally someone's going to elementary school, right?
My thoughts exactly Jessee!! We are terrified, but at the same time, the overlap will be only for a couple years, if and when we entertain having another!
And honestly, it's so true that Nature takes from you what you don't take from Nature! If you told me before DS was born that I had to SAVE $300/week with no pay increase, I would have told you you were nuts....but somehow I found it to spend on daycare!!!!
You just manage to find a way, the same as raising children....you think you could never do it, but you do!

Re: Sad, the thought of two in daycare seems impossible
in my situation if I paid that much for daycare I would only ahve 250 left over for the month, not worth it for me, I would need to stay home.

Re: Sad, the thought of two in daycare seems impossible
This is exactly why I'm not TTC now. We barely make ends meet now... with a second DC there's no way, and we have to both work because we can't swing it all on one salary.
We're waiting for DD to turn 2 so her day care fees will drop..

Re: Sad, the thought of two in daycare seems impossible
This is why we have waited so long to TTC. We are looking at having another child, if we do, after Bella is in Kindergarten (it's full day in my town) at this point, they will only overlap for a few months, even if I got PG in the next few months.
Also, this time around, my sister is more available. I may ask her to watch my child for a few days a week....
I am on the fence about all of this and I must say that $$$ and costs put us in this position.

Re: Sad, the thought of two in daycare seems impossible
you just make it work, however you need to to make the most of your situation. We will be having 3 in daycare soon and it is a HUGE expense but like others have said, it's one that will not last forever and having us both work works for us now.

Re: Sad, the thought of two in daycare seems impossible
Have you considered an au pair, they are not as expensive but are live in..you provide room and meals but hey, my friends is charging 250 a week and that is for up to 3 kids!
Keep that option in mind too...

Re: Sad, the thought of two in daycare seems impossible
The cost of one in daycare would be too much for us which is why DH and I work opposite schedules so we don't need childcare. It sucks that I don't get to have dinner with my DH except on weekends, nor do I really see him during the week except when I climb into bed at 1:30am.

Hi -
I look at it a different way...
I figure the 'cost' of me staying home will end up being greater in the long run. In my industry, I would probably end up having to take a pay cut if I stayed home for a few years and tried to re enter the work force.
Plus - even if daycare for 2 at a time costs a % of my income, I'm earning something.
I also see daycare as a finite expense - it ends in a few years.
I'm pretty much "glass 1/2 full" when I think about daycare. I don't mind the expense. I'm just really mad I missed enrollment for my flex account.
I've had a bad case of baby fever for months - I'll worry about daycare later.
(BTW - I can't believe how big your little girl is in the picture! - it goes fast!!)
Thanks Virginia
Baby fever, huh...you have something to tell

Re: Sad, the thought of two in daycare seems impossible
Because we decided to have #2 I had to resign. I didn't make but $200 more a month than it would cost to have them both in daycare. It was a really hard decision and times are getting tough but we really wanted a family and we make it work somehow - someway.
