S. Nassau, Winthrop or mercy- Which woud you pick??

I am in the process of looking for a new OBGYN but before I decide on a doctor I figure I woudl decide on a hospital and then see what DRs deliver there?

So if you had a choice of where to deliver your next baby, which would you pick & Why?

Thanks

Re: S. Nassau, Winthrop or mercy- Which woud you pick??

I delivered my DS at Mercy and had bad experiences with roommates, nurses, no warm water, etc so I will not be going there again.

My Dr. will not deliver at South Nassau even though he has the privileges.

I will be delivering at Winthrop. This is my OB's preferred hospital.

I delivered at Winthrop for my 1st DD. It just happened to be where my OB delivers. Being pregnant with twins, i'm very happy i'll be going there since they have a great NICU just in case of anything.

Thank you for posting this. I couldn't find out anything about their NICU. Andrew had to go there when he was born so this is very important to me. Thanks againChat Icon

Re: S. Nassau, Winthrop or mercy- Which woud you pick??

I delivered at South Nassau and LOVED IT!!!!!

The nurses were amazing, I had a private room at no additional charge (this was a biggie), all brand new facility, everyone was really really great.
I couldn't have had a better experience.
I have heard good things about Winthrop too......

I use Hirsch in Hewlett.....but I heard a rumor that he may be retiring from OB soon, so if you find another that you like out of SN please let me know!
But look into Hirsch, he's a very simple, no-nonsense doc.....

Winthrop.
2nd choice would be South Nassau.

My doc has priveledges at both and choose Winthrop over SN.

I'm not too familiar with Mercy, but I never really think of it as a Maternity Hospital, if you KWIM.

I delivered at Winthrop and it was fantastic. I liked the piece of mind that the NICU was there if needed. My dr didn't make it there in time so a resident delievered and she was so good I would go to her as my reg dr!

Mercy has been in the news lately for having a lot of problems so I would be reluctant to use them.

I had my baby in South Nassau in April and would gladly deliver again. DS was in the NICU and received excellent care. If the NICU was not able to care for him at SN, they would have transferred him to Winthrop.

Cosmetically of course South Nassau would win, it should afterall the unit is much newer however overall I find their technology is still behind most hospitals Their NICU is only a level 2 so they do not deal with high risk pregnancies too often, they usually get transferred to Winthrop. So if you are a low risk pregnancy looking to deliver in a country club environment then South Nassau would be your choice. If any issues arise with you or your baby you're going to want to deliver at Wintrhop.

Just wanted to add I cannot comment about Mercy because I am not familiar.

I would choose S. Nassau or Winthrop.. Mercy s u c k e d so bad.. I had to write letters after my DS was born complaining from the OB down to the L&D nurses. Maternity nurses were very nice. It was a horrible experiece from start to finish there... AND I WAS AN EMPLOYEE AT THE TIME!!!! Chat Icon

Winthrop hands down. I had my DS there and will be having the next there too. I actually had a really great experience there.

Like the previous poster said... cosmetically, sure Winthrop has an older looking maternity ward. Country club it is not! But if my baby God forbid needed serious NICU care, I would want a top notch NICU to be RIGHT THERE and not have to be worried about having the baby transferred.

It's a few days out of your life, I don't care that much about the surroundings. Just the reputation and quality of medical care.

I delivered at Winthrop and the NICU was phenomenal. I loved the nurses and rest of the staff.

Next one will definitely be at Winthrop.

Re: S. Nassau, Winthrop or mercy- Which woud you pick??

I think some may be misinterpreting what some of us have said about South Nassau.
ON TOP of it being a very good hospital with wonderful staff and equipment, it is also a beautiful hotel-like atmosphere, which is a bonus.

Nothing can substitute excellent care, and yes, I agree that Winthrop is the best hospital for NICU and high risk pregnancies, however I was neither of those and was comfortable not delivering there.

I would, however, take DS to Winthrop in an emergency.....

Re: S. Nassau, Winthrop or mercy- Which woud you pick??

I would pick either Winthrop or S. Nassau. I prefer Winthrop (had DS there), b/c of the NICU, I was and will be a high risk pregnancy and the level of NICU was a concern for me. I don't really know anything about Mercy but it doesn't strike me as a big birthing hospital, I don't know why though!

Re: S. Nassau, Winthrop or mercy- Which woud you pick??

I also delivered at South Nassau. I delivered both my sons there - one before renovations and one post. I had a great experience there the first time around - pre-renovations. The care I received was wonderful and more important - my son was in the NICU for 5 days and received terrific care and I couldn't have been more happy. I loved the nurses and esp the doctors in the NICU. I had my second son there in July and he was not in NICU and while I love the rooms and facility there now - so much better - my care wasn't was great as the first time. They seemed to cater to others - esp 1st time moms. The place was packed but I went almost an entire day without even a nurse visit - outside vitals and ped care for baby. If I have a third I'd probably go back anyway....since I really love the NICU care and know the drs that I had are still there should I need it. I have heard great things about Winthrop and the NICU is higher if that is of interest to you. I have heard negative about Mercy and would never consider them.
