Running - beginning

Thsi might sound weird, but I don't know how to run at beginner level, which is where I am right now.

I used to be an avid runner. I ran in HS, through college, then all through my 20's and two marathons in my late 20's and early 30's. The second marathon really did me in. It kicked my butt and I was burnt out. Since then, I kind of felll out of running and working out altogether. It's been a good 4 years since I've worked out regularly. This past year I've been quite the couch potato. I just don't know where to begin now that I'm older and have turned into a couch potato. I don't want to injure my knee or foot (both of which I've had problems with in the past)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Chat Icon

Re: Running - beginning

My father was never a runner when he was younger and just got into it in the past few years. He actually started by going for nighttime walks after dinner. That gradually became running and he just recently ran the LI Marathon. Maybe you can just start off with walks? If you have to run an errand walk there instead! It will also help get your ankle and knee used to the excercise!

I would try the Couch to 5K. You can always repeat weeks if your knee acts up or if it seems like too much. I thought it was a great way to get back into running.

You're welcome! Chat Icon I hope it works for you. There is a whole Couch to 5K thread on here somewhere. I'll see if I can find it for you.
Also, there are free podcasts on itunes that walk you through each week. I found it very helpful at the beginning when there is so much walking and running. Just download the podcast for each week and it plays music and tells you when to run and walk. Just search for Couch to 5K on itunes.
Good luck!

Re: Running - beginning

Like OP said start with walks..pick up pace each time. I started with fast pace walk for 2 min then jog for 2 min repeat. After a few weeks I was able to jog most of the time..took walking breaks. Now I can jog for 50 min with out stopping. Took a good 3-4 weeks.

Good luck!
