the "X" comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word that actually comes into English as "Christ". (edited because the Greek won't show up)

Did anyone else read the above in their heads as if the dad from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was explaining it? Chat Icon

Just wanted to add, I obviously have Zero use for the whole set up either way bc I don't have children. AND I'm kind of a Scrooge in general bc Christmas (all holidays really) are a pain in the ass with my family - DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA plus the fact that malls during the holidays makes me want to rip my own fingernails off...
But
I actually enjoy the elaborate Christmas scenery with Santa every year at all the malls. Especially RF mall. It's kind of the only thing I truly enjoy about the Christmas season. The big tree, the wooden soldiers, etc etc etc. if they have these pods everywhere, I'll kinda miss it.

I see everyone's point. Some people are really outraged because they were expecting the same thing they look forward to every year - it's tradition. And others are ok with the new change. Maybe tradition isn't #1 on their list. Either way - it's fine to feel the way you feel. Going tit for tat on here and pretty much faulting people for their feelings about it isn't nice. How about if you don't agree with people's outrage, you ignore it. Same as the people who are upset are supposed to just not go.

You can dislike it, but it seems as though there was no "anti-Christmas" agenda.

http://www.snopes.com/simon-malls-roosevelt-field-christmas-ban/

It wasn't enough to see the decorations and dislike them, even hate them, and not get your pictures done there. Instead we have to invent a nefarious motive for it.

The whole idea of a "War on Christmas" doesn't seem to have any factual basis. At a purely practical level, stores will never desert Christmas decorations because it's when they make the most money. I think everyone has to relax. Who cares if someone says "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays" as long as it is said with sincerity?

We look way too hard for things to be offended by, and social media just exacerbates the speed and reach of the offended.

Here's the thing, for their OWN benefit (regardless of WHY they chose that ugly pod) it was just such a stupid move on their part. They HAD to know that nobody would like it. The reality is, people are just looking for the traditional jolly old elf sitting in his fancy chair surrounded by reindeer and Xmas trees when they get their kids pics taken for Xmas. That's all. People like tradition at the holidays, nobody is clamoring for some new, "modern" way to visit Santa. If it's not broke, why fix it?? I think that is really all this comes down to for people.

It stands to reason too, whether it's ever said or not, that they were CLEARLY trying to put up a display that was more neutral and not as Xmas'sy for whatever reason. Maybe they meant well in doing so, but it was just a misstep on their end. Whatever, it happens. They tried something, it failed. No harm, no foul.

For their OWN benefit, they did the right thing in taking it down NOT because people would boycott the mall and stores (because I doubt they actually would) but because truthfully, if they wanted to make ANY money at all this season with Santa pics, they were going to be out of luck with that set-up. If you want to make money, you really do want to appeal to the masses. The masses like to see Santa in a Xmas scene, not a pod. That's all.Chat Icon

this is what it was replaced with?! they should have just left it and put santa closer to the trees. I would have [del]went[/del] gone to see it.

Still won't be taking pics there, they messed up big time and I really hope people boycott their Santa this year

Isn't forgiveness a big part of Christianity?

They listened to the public "outrage" (which was mainly a social media freak-out) and fixed the problem within one weekend. What more do you people want?!

I agree! I don't know what more people want?

I was thinking the same
What do people want? Blood?
The mall to close down?
The CEO to resign?
It was a mistake. People make mistakes.
Businesses make mistakes.
Look at all the products that came out over the years and failed.
Look at the New Coke debacle.
Part of being in business is taking risks.
Not all will work out.
They saw that it was a bad idea and fixed it- BEFORE thanksgiving, which in my mind is when the holiday season starts.
So for 2 days in early November they had up a bad santa scene
Big deal
They fixed it.
Move on

This has literally overtaken social media - not just here on LIF but on FB it's the only thing people are talking about, I can't even tell you how overloaded FB has been this past weekend between this and the Starbucks outrage.

They could've done such a nice job with a winter wonderland theme... Snowflakes, snowmen, lots of crystal looking stuff, etc. I bet if this winter scene was done right no one would have cared. It didn't have to be over the top Traditional Christmas. The pod just looked so sparce to me.

Me either! Chat Icon What is with Starbucks??

But as for this, all that FB/social media rage caused a change. I know this is a minor issue in the grand scheme of the world and its problems but there is something to be said for people voicing their opinion, no matter how trivial the issue may be, and causing a change.

So because people wanted this changed tbt don't care about other issues. Give me a break

It's totally ok to use social media for change to other hints but bc this is minor to some and obviously not a serious issue it makes people crazy for doing it

And for the record I shared it on fb bc I thought it was ridiculous. It looked awful and not Christmas like

I never declared a war on Christmas etc

But what do I know. I'm a idiot and only care about mall Santa's and nothing else

OMG.
That is even worse than the mall Santa IMO.
It's a cup.
To drink your friggin' coffee out of.
I got one this weekend and didn't even notice the cup- they had the sleeve over it so I couldn't even see what was on the cup. I just saw it was red now. Nor did I think to look under the sleeve.
I enjoyed my latte
Who gives a shitt about a cup.
If a Starbucks coffee cup really affects your Christmas spirit, then you need to look into the meaning of Christmas a bit more IMO

I agree with this...all those people who say they have better things to worry about are the exact reason why things like this display are happening.

If it does not bother you than pin a rose on your nose, but DO NOT dismiss that what Simon corporation and other groups who cater to these whiney people, did was a big slap in the face to one of the biggest religious groups in this country. We let this slide, than what?

We already don't allow GOD in public schools and have to worry about saying Merry Christmas to people who don't celebrate and getting offended, and calling the Rockefeller Christmas tree the Holiday tree...I mean seriously???

So, people are offended by other people being offended? Now, that "offense" is being taken as supporting a "War on Christmas." This is the most fabricated outrage I've ever witnessed. Why not take that energy and apply it to something that is real? The Christmas spirit should be based upon charity and family, not Santa and Christmas trees!!! Talk about being shallow.

Shallow??? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Oh wait, I'm sorry. So because I'd like to see a Xmas tree at Xmas that means I am shallow, don't care about my fellow man, and have little regard for family??? Oh, okay. Yes, that makes perfect sense. Chat Icon

You know what's getting old, people (like yourself) who feel it's necessary to point out that nobody has a right to ever be bothered by the "little things" in life. Guess what?? Not everything has to be a life and death, change the world problem for people to care about it. Just because someone thinks a Santa pod is ugly doesn't mean they are shallow and need to "take all that energy" and find something bigger to worry about. You can worry about and be bothered by the little things just as much as you can worry about and be bothered by the big things.
