Rome!

I was hoping that someone on this board might be able to help me pick a hotel in Rome?

I'm actually going to Italy the first week of September (way to leave this detail to the last second!) and have everything booked except this hotel. We are staying a week in a villa in Positano, and spending two nights in Rome before we make our way to the Amalfi Coast.

Ideally, I'd like to find a hotel that's close to everything and under $200 a night. I've been looking online, and maybe I'm just jaded, but everything that I would deem "nice" is sooooo expensive, and everything under $200 a night seems run down?? I think I just need some advice from someone who has been there.

Any recco's would be EXTREMELY appreciated. Thank you!!!

Re: Rome!

I stayed in Suitedreams in Rome. It was basic but very clean. I would stay there again.

Rome is expensive, and I always feel ripped off when I stay there. This place didn't make me feel like that.

Have fun in Positano! I was there in May and it was great!

The hotels in the center of Rome are expensive. We stayed at the Best Western Hotel Canada..It's near the termini area which was convenient.

The above poster suggested Suitedreams which I almost booked. Suitedreams and the Best Western Hotel Canada are pretty close to each other. I would check them out. I wrote a review for the BW Hotel Canada on tripadvisor.com. My screen name is the same one that I use on this site.

Lol! It's not that they are run down, most of them are in very, very old buildings which is part of the charm of staying in Rome! Chat Icon

Two places I've stayed at that are within walking distance to the historical center are Hotel Madrid which is a block from the Spanish Steps and Residenza Canali (B&B) which is around the corner from Piazza Navona. I think the Canali is more within your budget. As much as I love the Canali, it is a centuries old former residence that was converted to a B&B, there is no elevator and it has 5 stories, so you should be aware of that.

Have a wonderful time!

i'm a little late to respond so not sure if you have already booked but we stayed at the "Hotel Regno" last year when we went on our HM. It was literally steps away from everything! The Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon, Piazza del Poppolo, Spanish Steps, The Colisseum...It was about a 10 minute taxi ride to the Vatican, but we booked an excursion through the hotel for that so we wouldn't have to wait online once we were there.
The hotel has 9 floors and we stayed in the Penthouse (we splurged b/c it was our HM) and it had a fabulous, enormous terrace that overlooked the whole city! For the second half of our trip, we cam back to the same hotel about 3 weeks later and stayed on the 3rd floor, there is only one room on the 3rd floor that has a smaller, french balcony, which gave you amazing street views. The room was large (by Rome standards) gave you free breakfast, had a large computer room if you wanted to use it, and was very clean and affordabe. I don't remember what we paid per night, but i know the difference between the dollar and the Euro last year was a lot more than it is now, so it might be cheaper.
We actually stayed here after my SIL stayed here when she went for her HM and it was everything she described it to be. Yes, its in an older building and its in the middle of a block, so if you didn't know it was there, or look up, you'd be like wow! but its steps from everything, all the historical stuff, shops and restaurants!

Hotel Porta Maggiore in Rome. Wasn't the fanciest hotel, but it was clean and charming. I have no idea what the cost was b/c I was on a tour, but it couldn't have been much based on what I paid for my entire trip.
