Been twice stayed at the Marriott the first time and Windsor Atlantica the second time.
Obviously Christ the Redeemer was a popular tourist spot. We did a jeep tour/hking tour through the jungle which was fun. Sugar loaf mountain, Maracana stadium is an important landmarK to the Brazilian tourist guides. (It's the largest stadium in South America). If we skipped it, I wouldn't be upset-it's just a large stadium where the 2014 World Cup was played.
Lapa neighborhood for nightlife. Ipanema and Cococabana beaches was the most famous and very close to each other. They have little cafes and food stands. We went with people that were Brazalian and they acted like tour guides at points. They talked for days before we left about coconut water on the beach. We finally had it and it did not live up to their hype in my opinion. Rather have a cocktail.

Yes- one of my siblings got married there and we then went to Rio after. Soa Pablo is more urban (at least where we were). Every single time we left the hotel, the hotel staff would remind us to be safe- there is apparently a lot of crime both there and in Rio. (wedding was about 9 yrs ago ago and my next trip was 4 yrs ago)
Nothing happened to us. But I never wore jewelry. We were told not to bring any.

We went through a service since we worked until the day we left (not open on weekends). Took 5 days. There are services out there where you can get the visa in 24 hrs and it's not that expensive.

Re: Rio de Janeiro
I traveled to Rio a while ago (10 years).
Def very crazy beaches. Helicopter rescues were constant for people in the water (we went in the winter ? If this is seasonal).
Lots of very poor people next to very rich people & crazy crime. Any one wearing anything (even a digital $10 wrist watch) had it stolen & was potentially pushed around. These were all NYC kids... Not new to smart behavior. I put money in my bra & went around with nothing, so I was ok.
Most interesting thing was night life & street foods especially by the beach.

Never been, but I used to teach a lot of students from Sao Paolo. Holy crime! A former co-worker of mine was held up at gun point and robbed of her money and passport from the airport to her ex-boyfriend's house. She was saying something that it was some organized thing from the airport.
I know this is just one incident, but it just seems so crazy.
