im a big fan of discover credit cards

there is no annual fee and you get 1% cash back for every purchase. each quarter they have special categories that let you earn more cash back (5% as opposed to 1%) and you can use their site to link to shopping websites and earn cash back that way too (during holidays some websites like sears offers up to 20% cash back on your entire purchase)
you can use the cash back to get gift cards, a check or to pay your bill

Discover is the best IMO. Bonus categories throughout the year and you can use shopdiscover to get additional cash back for online purchases. They offer the highest percentages I've seen for travel and vacations as well- 5%.

Eta: I have the chase freedom card as well and they are good runner up to discover. I went with that one recently bc they were offering 15 months interest free and free $200 when you spend $500 within the first 3 months. I think i spent that within a week lol

What's nice about both cards is you can apply the cash back to amazon purchases.

We have the Capital One card - and love it so far. We get points on everything and then can redeem on travel how we best want, it's super flexible.

Re: rewards credit cards

Chase Freedom does the same - 1% on all, 5% on specific things like Amazon, Kohls, gas, restaurants, movies etc throughout the years.

Re: rewards credit cards

I have a Hilton Honors Visa card and it's my primary card. I'm not sure how it accrues points exactly. I've had it for over 10 years and, yes, you can only use it for travel at Hilton properties but so far we've gotten a few vacations totally paid for.

My parents have a Capital One Mastercard and that is great too. I mostly use their points to "pay" for my airfare to the Hilton properties I stay at.

I don't travel much but when I do it's nice to know I don't have to save up thousands of dollars to make it happen.

I have the AmEx blue cash rewards, which I love. I've had it for about 8 years now, before that I had the gold rewards card. I use it strictly for cash back but there are other rewards you can choose from. They've lowered the cash back rate since I first opened my card. Now it's 3% at grocery stores, 2% at gas stations and 1% everywhere else. I love their customer service and pay as much as I can with this card (I wish more places took it - that's the only downside).

I have two, the first is a GM MasterCard - I accrue points towards the lease/purchase of a GM vehicle. We have used the points to buy 2 cars and saved almost a combine $4,000.

The other is the Bank of America rewards card. You get 3% back on gas, 2% back on groceries, and 1% back on everything else. I think in a year we got back over $300.

Re: rewards credit cards

I think the cash back cards are the best but you have to pay them off at the end of the month.

The most cash back card I have found is the Fidelity Amex. It gives you 2% cash back into a Fidelity Account for every purchase and there is no dollar limit. But that is the thing, you have to have a Fidelity Account. No account, no money.

Discover gives 5% on certain purchases, but only up to $1,500 so if you spend more than that it really is not as great of a deal. It depends upon how much you shop and what you spend your money on. If you eat out a lot, have big home improvements, pay for gas with a CC, etc. - this might be the card for you, but we don't eat out a lot and pay for gas with cash to get the immediate discount, and have no home improvement plans for the near future. So the 5% is deceptive. If you are really good about looking at the categories and sticking with it, up to their dollar maximums then it is a good deal otherwise, go for one that gives you % off on everything.

Capital One gives 1.5% cash back with no limit, and you don't need to have a Fidelity Account. They also give $100 for $500 purchases in the first 3 months, which is also really great.

If you like to travel, then I would go with one that can give you both airline miles and is pared with a hotel so you can get a trip for free. This article might help you make your decision.

AA Advantage is good mileage card. You can get a lot of free trips from it.

i'm considering chase sapphire or an American Airlines card for the miles. (You get something like 30K or 40K miles just opening one)
