I don't know how to do that Xpost thing when you link them ..........

So I went to the BF class @ NShore, and the instructor said for ONE cocktail you consume (anything not beer or wine) you have to pump and dump 12 FEEDINGS !!!!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'd never seen that in anything I'd read before - I almost Chat Icon

No no, she said beer and wine are fine - You can drink a glass of wine and come home and BF w/o having to dump anything -
But if you drink a cocktail, you have to dump 12 FEEDINGS !!!!!!!!! -

***** is the difference ????

Ummm that makes no sense. I don't think she knows what she is talking about. I have heard two things. If you can drive-you can BF/pump OR 1 drin takes 3 hrs to leave your system. So you can have a drink right after you feed baby, then be fine when you feed again in 3 hrs. I drink wine and pump-not to excess but I do. When you have twins you cannot pump and dumpChat Icon

hmmm is it b/c of all the sugar in the cocktails takes the body longer to digest? 12 feedings sounds a bit excessive!Chat Icon

I don't know, but that sounds kind of weird to me. I remember always being told that 1 glass of wine, 1 12oz beer, and 1 shot of liquor have the same amount of alcohol, as far as blood alcohol content. I'd consult some other BF books.

that's what i was thinking too. i don't see why hard liquor would be any different than beer or wine if you're drinking a comparable quantity.

i would get a few more opinions before going with that one...

Re: Repost from Parenting re: BF class last night

Sorry, but the instructor sounds like an idiot. There's no way that alcohol would be in your system for that long. I've only had a glass of wine a few different times since having DS, but I don't pump and dump. I'd check out kellymom.com. I'm sure they have articles about this.

I'm really surprised. I don't think that's true at all. I was told that as long as I was sober enough to drive, I was sober enough to breastfeed. 12 feedings could be an entire day or more & I find it incredibly hard to believe that a cocktail or two could linger fot THAT long Chat Icon

Re: Repost from Parenting re: BF class last night

I don't think its true at all. I used the rule as long as I felt okay & was good enough to drive I was good enough to pump/nurse. I generally dumped once in the year I was nursing & that was in the beginning.

If I was at a wedding or BBQ (drinking mudslides), I made sure to limit it to 2-3 & I would nurse b4 I started drinking & then hold off as long as I could.

ITA. She sounds like either she's misinformed, or an alarmist. That's just nuts.

Re: Repost from Parenting re: BF class last night

that makes NO sense to me! i was always told that one serving of wine and beer is equal to one serving of say whiskey or vodka. i dont think sugar or anything else would change things THAT drastically. i mean, they teach you this when you take drivers ed and stuff, also in health class. i dont get it.

Re: Repost from Parenting re: BF class last night

I dont know about that. I was told you would have to pump and dump once, maybe twice. It's sooo not worth it if you have to dump 12 feedings for 1 glass of wine. Maybe she meant 1-2?
