Repairs cracks in a concrete slab

Who should I call to repair the cracks?

I think one portion is a bit "raised" from the other.

Re: Repairs cracks in a concrete slab

what will you be putting over it?

we had hardwood floors put over ours. they filled it with some concrete mixture and then laid the subfloor and floor. the floor guys did it.

if you're not putting a floor, then i'm not sure. maybe call some flooring places and ask

Re: Repairs cracks in a concrete slab

Call a masonry company or just a general handy man should be able to repair it.

Is it a flat slab? they will probably have to cut the crack out (like cut a square of concrete out) and then just fill that in with more concrete

Re: Repairs cracks in a concrete slab

I have a Levitt house so the whole house is on a slab.

I have to replace the carpet and lifted the edge by the outside wall and noticed it was cracked and one side of the crack is a bit raised.

I will put either laminate floor or tile. Still undecided.

We cannot put hardwood floors on a slab.

you definitely can put hardwood floors on a slab. we did it last year and it's beautiful.

i don't know what they did underneath the wood, but i have a high ranch so the first floor of my house is a slab. i called about 5 flooring companies and all said i could do it, but the difference in price was insane.Chat Icon

Technically I could do it but it would raise the floor too much. I cannot change the tile in the kitchen so I would have a few inches raise to go from the kitchen and hallway to go to the LR. That's a bit weird because it's lower than an actual step.

I think I responded on the other thread, but you gave a little more info here. Chat Icon

If the cracks aren't large and the difference in elevations aren't major, the tile installer might be able to repair them as part of the prep work for the tile. If you are getting estimates, ask them to look at it and tell you if they can do it and is it included in the cost of the work.

If not, a general handyman could probably do it. It doesn't have to involve cutting out pieces of concrete and replacing them, unless there is major damage, which isn't what it sounds like. The cracks can be filled in and if a part of the raised slab needs to be leveled out, it could be ground down to meet the rest of the floor.

Re: Repairs cracks in a concrete slab

Our condo had a slab and all along the foundation the concrete settled and was lower along the wall. We were told that's normal! Its for the concrete to expand and contract and was due to settling, our condo was built in 2000. Ours was actually under the molding, so we just put the floor right up to it to allow for expansion. We actually put tile right up against it to in the 1/2 bath, but the tile guy warned us not to put direct pressure on it cause the tile might crack.

For the larger differences, my dad mixed some cement and did it on a grade.

We put high grade laminate flooring right on top of the slab, my dh, father and brother did it.

Whoever is installing should take a look at this. This is not uncommon. There are many ways to work with this, leveling agents, filers and membranes which can be laid to prevent the crack from damaging the floor installed on top. Even if the crack is repaired it could come back depending on what the root cause is. Depending on the thickness of the crack you should be able to install which ever floor you choose, wood, tile or laminate. Personally I would go with laminate since it’s easier to pull up if the crack causes another problem later.
