Religion question

I have a rather personal question.

Has anyone ever dealt with a DH who has changed his beliefs once a child was born? My DH's beliefs are changing and I feel like he is changing the rules in the middle of the game. We discussed how we would raise our children before we ever conceived our DS.... now everything is different.

Re: Religion question

Yes, I have something similar going on here. Both my husband and I were always agnostic and were both raised Catholic. We both agreed to not raise our children in any religion, as we didn't believe in it, but that we would do Christmas, etc, as traditions in our family. However, now, he seems to have a renewed interest in bringing Ava up as a Catholic. I am not for that, but I told him if it's important to him, then he can be in charge of her religious upbringing by having her baptized, taking her to church, etc. So far, he hasn't done anything of the sort, though, so I doubt he'll follow through. I don't think you can really fault him, things happen and you don't know how you'll react until you have kids. It definitely is something you two ahve to work out, but I wouldn't be mad, how could he have known his feelings would change?

Re: Religion question

No, but if he did change what we had previously discussed, I would be very upset.
He is catholic, and I am jewish. Neither one of us is religious in the slightest. We decided even before we got married we would not do any kind of religious ceremonies with kids, we would celebrate holidays with both families and when they got older if they wanted to identify more with one religion, that would be their choice. If he all of a sudden decided he wanted to get the babies christened, I would be extremely upset and it would cause a huge argument. I actually had a nightmare about that a few weeks ago for some reason.

This is how I am feeling. I am so emotional over all of this. DS was raised Catholic and was considerably more religious than I. I was raised Lutheran, but my mom was the one "in charge" and she died when I was ten. My dad did the best he could to continue with my mom's wishes, but it was clear he was no "into it."

Now, DH is doubting his faith. He waivers between calling himself an agnostic and an atheist. I have no problem with his beliefs, but I am upset that he is telling me he will not be able to "lie" to DS when he asks about his beliefs. (when that time comes) I asked him to be honest, but to preface his replies with "People believe different things. I believe..." and not comment on how he feels about people who do believe in God and religion.

I will be the one taking DS to church and I am fine with that.

I'm not sure if that is the best scenario.

Re: Religion question

Let me add that I was raised by a mother who was Catholic and a father who was agnostic and I never thought there was anything weird about it. Infact, I never saw anything weird about it when my parents became Buddhists when I was young and I was still going to religion class to make my confirmation. It's only as confusing as you want it to be. I know a family who had their DD confirmed in the Catholic church and a year later, bat-mitzvah-ed in temple. I'm not making light of the situation, but you also cannot be mad at him for questioning his faith and how he feels about it. It's so personal, even in a family. I really, honestly could not be mad at my DH for questioning it all and having a change of heart, but that's just me. I am of the mind that I will expose Ava to as much as I can and then she can decide.

Thanks for the insight. I am nor mad at DH for changing his beliefs. I am just in fear of the unknown, I guess. I thought I knew how things would go in this respect, and now it all seems up in the air.

I was trying to tell DH last night that I think we need to treat this as if he and I are different religions. I totally respect his decision. I am just not so sure he respects mine. He told me last night that he would be upset if DS grew up to be religious! I told him that I would not be upset if DS grew up to be agnostic or atheist, so long as he was respectful of other people's beliefs.

Ok, now I see the issue. Yes, he should be respectful of your decision to expose him to your religion. Afterall, it's a part of you, and that's important for your DS to know. And it's a little silly for him to be upset that DS might grow up to be religious. That would make me really upset, too. Whatever my daughter grows up to be, as long as she's happy and healthy, is fine by me and I hope for your DH that he will be fine with the same for your son. It's probably just a hot issue at the moment. I'd let it calm down for a week and then approach him about it again. Maybe he will be more receptive with a clear head.

Re: Religion question

Dh and I are from different religions. He was raised Jewish and I was raised Catholic. We decided before we got married how the children would be raised. We are doing all the holiday but none of the sacraments (or Jewish equivalent). We did do a baby blessing when ds was a few months old. It incorporated aspects of both religions. So it was combination baby naming/christening. But was not too god heavy. It was more about the family traditions and family helping us to raise our child. It was a beautiful ceremony and kept both sides of the family happy. If Dh tried to change things now I would be upset and hurt since we discussed this all before hand. He can worship however he chooses but the children will remain neutral until old enough to decide for themselves. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
