Refrigerator - side by side

Give me the good, the bad, the ugly. do you love it, hate it, why?

I need a new fridge and I cannot decide between top freezer and side by side.

Re: Refrigerator - side by side

I have a side by side. I am happy with it. The only thing is you cannot fit really large items in it. Like a sheet ice cream cake. Not a problem for me since I never have anything that big and we have an old frig in the garage.

I decided against the freezer on the bottom cause I feel like things get lost in the bottom since you are constantly putting thing in on top of the items already in there.

Re: Refrigerator - side by side

DW loves the side-by-side. It's good for DC, since they can get to the freezer (at least the lower half) if they want/need to. The doors don't intrude into the room as much (although some of the newer bottom freezer units have the two half doors for the fridge part)
The biggest negative is the width of both compartments for large items, but we have a 2nd fridge that is a top freezer, so we have the best of both worlds.... Chat Icon (except for 2x the electricity costs.....)

Re: Refrigerator - side by side

I've had both a freezer on the bottom and a side-by-side. I prefer my freezer on the bottom. The side-by-side is small! You can't fit anything in the freezer like a frozen pizza or tray of anything. It's so annoying!

Ditto!

I have side by side, freezer top and freezer bottom and would NEVER go back to a sbs again. They are so narrow and that spacer between the freezer and fridge really takes up ALOT of space.

Go with the freezer on the bottom 'cus those are the more energy efficient and if you get the two tier freezer (with 2nd rack on top), you should be fine.

The only good thing about sbs fridge is it's cheaper and works better for narrow kitchens.

Re: Refrigerator - side by side

I had a side by side and got the french door fridge. The french door is so much better - fits basically anything I want to store in there. With the side by side, I was constantly getting annoyed at things that would not fit.

Ditto!!!!!!! DON'T DO IT!!!!

We purchased all new appliances in my kitchen and I was so excited for my side by side. I'm already regretting it and curse myself any time I want to freeze any large items (extra sauce, large ribs, pizza) or any time I buy Ice Cream Cake! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

THIS! Everything on the left of the fridge freezes and there is no room for anything that is larger than norm or irregular shape. Just got a new French Door fridge and it's like Christmas every day when I open it!!!! Chat Icon

Re: Refrigerator - side by side

HATE HATE my side by side.
I can't put big/wide things in either the freezer or fridge.
I hate having to bend down constantly to get at things in the fridge. Fruit/veggie bins are small.
I feel like stuff gets lost on the bottom shelf of the fridge cause I can't see it easily.

I'd rather have the french door with freezer on the bottom, no water or ice dispenser as they take up too much room inside.
It's just better for me not to have to bend down constantly to get at stuff.

Re: Refrigerator - side by side

I want to thank everyone for their comments. DH said he didn't want to get a new fridge that I would hate every single time I walked into the kitchen. From your comments I can see that side-by-side is not where I want to be.

As I used to have a bottom freezer and hated it - top freezer will be the way I'm going.

My ILs hate their side by side. My parents love theirs, but they also have a deep chest freezer. I feel things get lost in any fridge if you don't keep on top of it. I have a top freezer and I hate bending and kneeling down to get to my produce drawer. I open my freezer much less so I'd rather have it on the bottom.
