Redoing a Basement

Has anyone lived in their house while redoing/finishing their basement?

We bought our house in the summer and planned to move in only after all the renovations have been done, the last major project is the basement. Now that it's getting cold, Im thinking maybe we should just move in and live there while the contractors finish the basement.

For those that have done this, was the mess/dust really bad? Or did it not really bother you much?

Re: Redoing a Basement

I'm in the process of having our basement finished right now and we live in the house. It doesn't bother me at all. The guys doing the work are really clean and neat and they keep the basement door closed while they work. I haven't had any problems with dust or dirt from the work being done. My laundry room is in the basement and it has not been a problem for me at all.

My DH's parents are doing their basement while living in their house. Not a problem at all... they just always leave the door to the basement shut.

We're not redoing our basement, but we are in the process of having two bathrooms gutted and redone and it hasn't bothered me in the least (and I'm very sensitive to dust) Our contractor is very neat and clean

Ya Im very sensitive to dust, it causes my asthma to act up. Right now the contractors have not been very neat, I guess if we are living in the house, they will be better about it. I'll have to talk to DH and see what he thinks.
I just dont want to deal w/ moving in and out in the snow!

Thanks for the responses everyone!
