Rear Wheel car and snow
Watching the news and see this Mustang trying to go uphill. Why would anyone own a rear wheel car in the NY?
Dude.. you CANNOT drive a rear wheel car in the snow. You SHOULD know better. They are even asking people owning those cars to leave them where they are parked.
Still don't get why cops have those cars in NY.

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow
I used to have an Infiniti G35 coupe. I LOVED that car - it was fast and fun. However, on 2 occasions I almost killed myself because the car was bad in the rain and downright undriveable in the snow. DH made me get rid of my toy and I have an AWD car now which is much better (and absolutely nowhere near as fun or cool) than my other car.
Miss you Roxy

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow
I just got a rwd car in Oct (I didn't seek one out, just so happened the car I wanted only came in RWD). DH wasn't too happy about it and actually scared me that I wouldn't be able to get anywhere in the snow. We got snow tires and I haven't had any problems. Although I tend to stay off the road right after the snow falls.

Dude.. you CANNOT drive a rear wheel car in the snow.
What are people who have RWD cars supposed to do? Not go to work and get docked? You can go out, you just have to use caution.
Mustangs aren't the only RWD cars out there. What about all the BMWs and Mercedes on the road that don't have AWD.
I have an Audi AWD sports coupe that has speed racing summer tires (more extreme than the Mustang). All of the AWD in the world did not help me during the blizzard as I was all over the place. Very dangerous.
I went out after that first storm and bought a set of snow tires and wheels. I spent $1500 bucks but it was the best investment ever.
The Audi with these snow tires is now glued to the road and it handles better in the snow than my SUV.
For those that have RWD cars, a good investment in some cheap snow tires/wheels would really make a difference. The way I see it, when I am done with the car I can sell the wheels/tires and get back most of my investment.

DH had purchased snow tires and wheels for me within a week of bringing home my BMW (it's a 128i which they don't offer awd for). I think we spent less than $1000 and it was a very wise investment.

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow
i have a mustang and drove it yesterday and i was fine. its all about knowing how to drive the car and how to drive in the snow and take it slow.
granted i wont have it out today DH is home so i can use his truck, but there is just to much snow today for my car, and im not that stupid like these other people who take them out now.

But of course you did!
Oh wait... did I see you made the "best investment"?

But today is NOT a good day to take the car out and get stuck. I had a rear wheel car. I KNOW how it drives in slush. NOT GOOD!

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow
DH & I own a Toyota Camry & a BMW 328i...i am terrified to drive in the snow period. but i will say that i feel slightly more comfortable driving in the RWD BMW only because of the traction control.

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow
This thread reminded me of something that happened yesterday.
My male coworker and I were making small talk about the snow. He asked if my new car was front wheel drive.
I said, I have no idea?
He said, wait, you don't know if your car is front wheel drive???
and I said, nope - maybe I should call my husband and ask.
He just shook his head and said "Please just stay off the roads tomorrow. .. . ."
I am such a disappointment.

Our 2nd car is a Mustang. It is 13 years old and I drive it to the train station. We cannot afford to get another car right now. I had to drive it home from the train station yesterday. I just drove 5 mph (and probably ****** off a lot of people behind me ). I have no choice!

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow
my rwd BMW is retired for the winter exactly b/c of this.
they CAN be driven in the snow under certain circumstances (like if you have something heavy in the back to weigh them down) and snow tires...maybe some other stuff.
but I've been in my car when it started snowing and it is NOT fun or safe.
that's why we also have a Subaru.

My only accidents (my fault) was when I drove a RWD car in wet weather.

You aren't the only one. When DH was researching the BMW when we were looking to buy he read that something like 60% of the people who own this model have no idea that it's RWD.

Still don't get why cops have those cars in NY.
To catch up to the speeders, and because they don't look like the standard cop car.

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow
DH had to get his darn charger and all he does is fishtail everywhere. I had monte carlo and crown vics all my life so i used to take cement blocs and put them on the back wheel wells. It does help and dh refuses to do this.
I have a front wheel that still slips in the slush and anyone hitting ice will have a hard time stopping or controlling their car (4WD and all) what helps is good tires and weight.
