rawhide bones?!
how do ppl feel about rawhide bones? i've heard bad things and ive heard good things.... wanted to throw this out there to see what everyone thinks about their dogs having rawhide products

Our vet told us to stay away from them; the variable here is what type of "chewer" is he? My dog Sophie's nickname is "destructo" she rips everything to shreds and is a POWER chewer. So she could tear up a rawhide bone in minutes and might swallow pieces, which could lead to an obstruction.
If your dog has a normal or soft bite AND you can monitor the dog whenever she has the rawhide, you might be ok. I would never be able to watch her everytime she had one so we skipped it.
I prefer the kong toy (the black one, power chewers!) and I usually put some peanut butter in there, it keeps her stimulated and she hasn't destroyed one yet!

we never even tried giving them to her. MIL scared us ever since she told us her dog ended up in the hospital from a rawhide bone.

thanks ladies.... i dont think we are going to give them to our pup... DH came home with one and he started chewing away & i freaked and read him all these things online about the dangers of rawhide... but OF COURSE i wanted to see what the pets board on LIF had to say

we give ours edible nylabones..we were told that they were better than rawhides....when we give them to m y pups, we watch them closely and don't let them eat the entire thing....mine are also powerful chewers

I have a tiny dog and rawhide isn't good for her - she could choke on it, or it could rip her intestines.
We give her nylabones to chew on - no issues and she loves them. They make them in different flavors/sizes/textures, etc. Plus, they're only made in the US.

Never gave it to my dog and prob never will. I just heard stories true or not, I just give her other treats instead to play it safe.

I never give my dogs Rawhide. They can get caught in their intestines and they are just so horrible for them.

There are edible ones specifically made to digest.

I was told not to give my Yorkie rawhide - not sure if it was because yorkies arent allowed rawhide.
However, when I lived with our uncle we used to give them to our boxer and chihuahua. They never got sick and loved them.

my pup loves these....... lil pricey , but i buy the biggest one , lasts a while longer. as for the rawhide, they are not digestable for the dog, & they can chocke on them .. Big big dogs , maybe not , but i wouldnt risk it on a small one.. my vet & the pet store ppl agreed

i forgot to mention before that mine also have the hard white nylabones that are not edible---they love chewing on them.....with any toy, i feel you have to closely monitor to make sure large pieces don't come off....

We give Katie rawhide. The vet said as long as she chews it and doesn't take off big chunks she is ok. We've found when we don't give her rawhides she finds something of ours to chew. We alternate with kongs and nylabones as well but she really likes the rawhides.

ummm... jack is a70lbs rott/gms mix
i give him a rawhide from time to time & he seeme to love it, he chews it really well and loves to work the bone... but now after reading the above.....should i not give it to him ?
