rash/dry skin from potty seat? need quick yet urgent help!!

So DS is getting dry patches/red skin right around the ring of his potty seat (we have the foam style one that goes on the big potty. I'm not going back to a little one.

So, could it be what I'm cleaning it with it? DS has "aim" issues which forces me to clean his entire potty (inside & out) almost once a day. I usually use the fantastik but maybe its too harsh.

Should I try just soap and water? Its urine so I want it to really clean.

Thanks!

I definitely think it could be from the Fantastik- I would think that might be too harsh for skin. Urine is sterile, so you don't need to go nuts cleaning it. When I clean my son's potty seat after he pees, I just use a wipe usually. Soap and water would do the trick too. HTH!

Does your DS have dry or sensitive skin?

My DD started getting butt cheek rashes, same as you describe, once she started pulling herself back onto the potty seat (on the toilet).

She also started getting rashes when using pullups or underwear, on her butt cheeks, from the pulling up motion that her butt wasnt used to.

She just has sensitive skin as I wasnt cleaning the seat with anything and also it happened with the underwear and pullups too.

I just then would apply vaseline at night, etc, and eventually the rashes stopped I assume once her butt got used to the friction. Sounds exactly like what you are talking about. Try vaseline and give it some time. Def dont switch the seat, its not that!

BTW, as above poster said, other than urine being stinky at times...it is sterile. You really cant get any major bacteria from urine. I just use a wipe when I see urine in the seam of the seat. Very rarely will I use a clorox wipe.

thanks!!! this makes sense. Last night I used Aquaphor and this morning it cleared up so I'll use that for a couple of nights.

this. I know people think urine = unsanitary...but it's actually quite sterile and in fact if you were in the jungle with an open wound the best thing to do is pee on your wound. It's PH balanced, non toxic and contains nutrients and healing compunds. honestly...with the harsh chemicals in fantastik...he'd be safer sitting on his own urine...not that anyone would want that. I think an all natural or mild soap and water would be much better.

1 Cup Water
1 Cup Distilled White Vinegar
6 drops of Tea Tree Oil (natural antiseptic qualities)

put this in a spray bottle and you've got a natural safe cleanser to use on childrens toys, potty seat, changing table etc.

So wierd ds just starting using potty and was scratching and now has a rash. I thought it was from the fabric softener I used on his undies since he was always wearing diapers. I will try Vaseline tonight

also check to be sure there were no recalls on it...remember those flip flops made in china that were recalled bc they made people break out in awful rashes? thats probably less likely but you never know!

As far as his "aim" problem - I tell DS to "make sure you hit water"
