Questions for the scuba divers

So our classes are June 16,17,18 and we need to buy a mask, snorkel and fins. The scuba shop we went to only has REALLY expensive stuff. (A brand called Oceanic.) I don't want to buy junk, but we aren't ever going to be master divers, either.

A couple of questions:

Do you have a preferred brand of equiptment?

Do we really need the adjustable strap fins and boots? I am pretty sure our diving will be warm water only, and was hoping we could get by on the ones that don't need boots.

Does the split fin really make a difference? All I know is that the price difference is pretty big.

Do you like the masks with the purge valve? I think I would prefer it.

Thanks guys!

Brand doesn't matter as much as comfort. How much you spend may depend on how often you think you'll actually use the equipment.

I would definately go with the boots and adjustable strap fins. I've used the slip on type, and they just don't feel right and you may spend a lot of time and energy just trying to keep them on. If you don't think you'll use the split fin ,then there is no need.

I don't like the masks with the purge valve, but that may be because when I started, there was no purge valve on the masks. But definately make sure you're snorkel has the pruge valve!

My mask doesn't have a purge valve either.

Definitely the adjustable straps on the boots.

For fins, I had buy another pair when I lost one during my certification dive. The cheaper ones were the first pair. The second pair were much more expensive. I noticed a signficant difference in how much faster & easier it was to swim with the more expensive pair. I'll ask DH what kind he bought me.

Re: Questions for the scuba divers

the thing i would be most concerned about is the Mask

Unless you are going to go full force in the scuba any old fins will do...

But i think having a decent mask is IMPORTANT!

I think they're all important. When something is uncomfortable out of the water, it's 10x more uncomfortable underwater, in currents & trying to go through coral.

In order of importance I'd say
Mask
Regulator
BC
Wet Suit
Booties
Fins
Snorkel
Knife & Strap (ok I never had any reason to use it but it made me feel better in case there was a really big fish behind me).
