Questions about registering for school district when buying a house
what do you have to show to register for the school district since you may not have any bills yet, and taxes are not in your name so quickly? is a proof of residency from a utility bill enough? closing paper? deed?
does it vary from district to district or is this standard?

Re: Questions about registering for school district when buying a house
You can register for a school district with an executed contract. They will flag you basically so within a certain time period (45 days or so) they expect to see that your deal has closed and you are residents in the school district. You can give them your deed, your HUD or anything that is proof that you own the property.

so does it matter if you move in or as long as you own it you have a right to register and be bussed?

Questions about registering for school district when buying a house
I would call the District's Pupil services office & explain what you have. You prob have to bring bank papers in since you'll have to wait for deed.

Questions about registering for school district when buying a house
I'm no expert at all, but I can't imagine it matters if you've moved in or not once you close. How does the school know?

It matters to them. I know that in my district, the paperwork clearly stated that we must be LIVING in the district, not just owning a home. Mail cannot be forwarded to another address. (All mail from the district states: do not forward.) But, if you are getting mail just not living in the house, I can't see how they would know.

Re: Questions about registering for school district when buying a house
We supplied a letter from our lawyer, indicating our closing date, when we registered our son for school. This was a long time ago though . If you call the new district, they should be able to tell you exactly what you need.

Re: Questions about registering for school district when buying a house
My realtor said districts will register a new student with just a contract to buy. however, when I tried to do this to see if we could at least get my son in for the kindergarten screening, we were denied. The district said they will only accept a deed and will only register him after we close.
You should call registration in your new district and ask for their policy.

As for bussing, the district I dealt with would not allow the child to use the bus until the deal was closed. The parents were allowed to register the child for school based on the fully executed contract but they had to drive him everyday until they were closed on the house.
And I take back my comment about the HUD. That has way too much personal financial info on it. I would just provide the copy of the deed that is signed at the time of closing.

Re: Questions about registering for school district when buying a house
Our district required a fully executed copy of the contracts and another piece of proof but I don't recall what it was. I did stay within the school but different bus route. He wasn't aloud on the bus until I was able to get a bill in our name. I had to drive him to and from school for a week.

Re: Questions about registering for school district when buying a house
Our district is very strict, but I think it may vary. You can only register for school if you are closed AND in residence. So if you're doing renovations and living elsewhere, they will not accept your child. Home visits are very common--not just drive-bys, but coming into the home at some random hour to see if the kids you are registering are actually living there. I think it's a little crazy, but it seems to be the trend now.
Also, don't just take the word of the secretary who answers the phone. I would take the time to go down to the administrative/business office at the district and speak to the person who actually does the registering. I have a friend who was totally burned bc she went by what she was told on the phone by a secretary.

Questions about registering for school district when buying a house
The law provides that you have to actually be living in the District in order to be registered for school. Some school districts allow the registration when you are in contract but it depends on the District. I would look at the policies of the school that you are buying in because unless there is a policy the rule is you cant go to school there until you actually live in the house. Owning the home alone is not enough.
