Queens school district questions

Anyone know how Community District 26 (supposedly the best in queens) would compare to a Nassau district on the border - specifically Floral Park/Bellerose. Obviously the Nassau taxes are much higher - is the school district worth it?

Re: Queens school district questions

Nassau Property taxes are higher but in Queens you will pay NYC taxes which makes it more even.

I agree with pp. You also need to factor in that the average price of a house in SD26 is usually higher than in Floral Park SD.
By the time you get the house, pay the taxes, etc, you could either even out or be paying more in queens@!

So, would you say that Floral Park SD is the better of the two? That's what I'm asking really.

I think it depends on which schools within the district you are talking about.
If you are zoned for Floral Park Memorial HS i think you are better off than in SD26 JMO

Exactly. We live in Queens and what we pay in real estate and income taxes actually is equal to what we would pay in Floral Park LI (we looked/are looking into possibly moving there)

The elem and middle schools in Floral Park Queens are VERY good. I know first hand. The HS however is Martin Van Buren which does not have a good reputation. Of course in NYC you "apply" to HS's so your children DO have an opportunity to get into great NYC HS's but in the event that they do NOT get in elsewhere their entitled seat is at Van Buren.

HTH feel free to FM me w/questions I work in D26 and am well versed in NYC HS applications Chat Icon

Yes NYC taxes are killer, plus each person in the household has to pay them, so it adds up to a lot. We pay "only" 5K in property taxes but also about another 6K combined in NYC taxes.

I don't know much about the Floral Park District but I believe District 26 is the best in NYC.

I'm not sure of your long term plans but personally, DH and I left Whitestone (D 25, also very good) because we didn't want to pay for private high school in case DD didn't get into a good public HS. At least outside of the city there is more certainty with high school placements. So depending on how long you plan to stay, it's something to think about.

DS 26 is better than floral park IMO. I went to DS 26. Best district in queens. I went to Cardozo HS great school for queens.

I grew up in and currently work in D 25...DH and I just moved out to nassau county and are paying pretty hefty taxes. I wasn't concerned about elementary schools or middle schools in queens, but without a doubt, we were going to be paying for catholic HS. By the time my children are in HS, I cannot imagine what that will run us Chat Icon. A side note, we thought we would miss queens being that we both grew up there...we do not miss it one bit.

Re: Queens school district questions

Floral Park/Bellerose SD is fantastic.

Floral Park Memorial is also excellent. I graduated there in 1991 and it has gone through a number of changes. The sports program is MUCH better and the school has won more awards. However it is now a good deal bigger (my graduating class was 150 and now I'd say the graduating classes are over 200) and it's more diverse, as is just about every other public school on LI. I know a lot of people who send their children there and I know a number of people who work there.

Cardozo is not the zone for Floral Park Martin Van Buren is. I work for the DOE and I cannot tell you how many people buy in d26 thinking they can go to Cardozo--it is is only your one if you live in a specific part of Bayside if not you must apply like everyone else in NYC and the odds of you getting in are very slim--4000 students apply for 100 spots in their application programs. Same goes for Bayside and Francis Lewis (the other two very good NYC HS's).

I think it all depends on if you are living in Floral Park on the queens side or the LI side. If you live on the queens side you are most def going to Martin VB, but you are also paying lower taxes and ny city tax.
If you live on the LI side chances are you will go to Floral Park Memorial which is an excellent school, be paying higher taxes, but no city tax.
Cardozo is also a great school, but you need to live in a small pocket of bayside to be zoned, or you need to apply to get in, and like pp said, there are only 100 spots.
I also wouldnt say cardozo is better than floral park memorial or vice versa.

Also remember that the HS application process is different from when we went to school. It is now done as a lottery system regardless of where you live. You must put down 10 choices and pray that you get into one of your top choices.

This just started the last couple of years. I teach in a middle school in D25. It freaks a lot of the parents out, rightfully so. Many kids have to travel very far if they don't get their zoned school. Yet, another thing I disagree with in the NYC public school system!

I am a guidance counselor in D26 I work with students on HS applications and the above is NOT true.

All students are guarenteed a seat in their zone if they have it on their application (and even if you do not have it you can fight for it and win if it is your zone).

Also the programs they apply for are NOT all lottery. There are several selection methods most of which use your child's 7th grade test scores, grades and attendance to determine whether they get in. There are some lottery programs.

It is a very intense process to be honest and there are SO many factors.

You can read here for detailed information: http://schools.nyc.gov/ChoicesEnrollment/High/Admissions/default.htm

If you live in NYC and your child is in middle school I highly recommend you schedule an appt w/your child's guidance counselor so it can be explained to you. HTH Chat Icon
