Question regarding congenital deafness
Can someone explain to me why most white coated breeds Dogos are susceptible to congenital deafness?
What does the color of their coat have to do with it?

Re: Question regarding congenital deafness
There is a link between the gene that makes white fur and creates deafness. Usually its the dogs that are all white... I remember making sounds when I picked Katie out of the liter to make sure she wasn't!

I thought Dalmations were highly succeptible to deafness as well.

Yes, I believe I read that 8% of dalmations are deaf in both ears and 22% are deaf in one ear!
I believe deafness is most common in dogs that are white or mostly white (though clearly dogs of any color can be deaf). I also remember reading somewhere when researching great danes that it is associated with the merle and harlequin gene in several breeds, too.

Here's a really long article I'd fall asleep if I read it though.

Re: Question regarding congenital deafness
The same thing is true for cats who are odd-eyed (two different colored eyes) and have white coats. Something like 50% of them are deaf.
