Question re: fevers
When a fever breaks, doesn't that usually signify the end of illness?
A high fever (accompanied by profuse sweating and no fever for a few hours) doesn't usually follow with an even higher fever, right?
Sorry if this isn't making any sense. I'm starting to lose my ability to make sense these past few days.

I had a fever for 4 days recently. Once the fever broke I was feeling better but the cough is lingering still.
Did that help?

I don't thik that is necessarily true. I thik you can still have the illness w/o the fever.

There is a particular illness that children can get that the fever comes, breaks, and then returns and that is the primary symptoms for identifying that particular illness... I know because at one point we thought Jake may have had it...I'll see if I can find what it was... I assume you are asking because of Joseph so that's why I mentioned children...

It is Joseph. Is that the one with the bright red cheeks? I remember looking it up. I just haven't heard of a high fever breaking and then jumping back up to 104, breaking & then coming back.

Have you taken him to the Dr? Is he throwing up? Fevers and vomitting can be a sign of appendicitis.
Are there any other symptoms??

He went to the Dr. yesterday.
No vomiting (except a little on Day 1). He has a red blotchy throat. The quick strep test came back negative. The culture should come back tomorrow.
It's the waiting that's killing me. Well that seeing my son whimpering & having no sleep.

Duh - how could I forget - it was coxsackie!
About half of all children with coxsackie virus infection have no symptoms. Some children suddenly develop fevers of 101 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit (38.3 to 40 degrees Celsius), headache, and muscle aches. Some also develop a mild sore throat, abdominal discomfort, or nausea. A child with coxsackie virus may simply feel hot but have no other symptoms. In most children, the fever lasts about 3 days, then disappears; in others, the fever is biphasic, meaning that it appears for 1 day, then disappears for 2 to 3 days, then returns for 2 to 4 days more.

When I was younger I rarely had fevers, but when I ran them they usually went up to 104. Then it would break and go down to normal then it would go up to 104 again. Just when my mom thought about sending me back to school the next day I would be running a fever again. I don't think it's necessarily the end of the illness and you can be sick w/ no fever. I would say if someone is fever free for 24 hours and their symptoms are starting to subside, that would mean the beginning of the end.

What about mono? Do they get it that young?
The only time I had a high fever, like completely miserable, bundled up , scarf, hat gloves in my bed was when I had mono
I had to take a freezing cold bath. Fever went down, but I still felt very sick
I remember the doctor for some reason was hesitant to test for mono, until I came to him for the third time that week!
edit: I wasn't young though

could the fever be breaking when the medicine is on board and then coming back when it wears off. Also I think it is common for fevers to spike at nighttime.

when i get fevers, they come and go. I have had fevers that lasted days. it would come and go and then come back worse than before.
