Question for the bar drinkers....buy backs
Everytime we go out with a particular friend, to a bar out drinking (along with others) we buy a bunch of pitchers or pints and spend a decent amount of money.
Here's the thing, if we go somewhere and drink for a bit, he always expects that the bartender will "buy back" either a few pints or a pitcher, depending on the amount we are drinking.
When he gets the bill and sees that we were charged for all the drinks, he will get annoyed about it. He won't say anything per se to the bartender, but he will tip a little less than he normally would. (But no less than 15% -- he will never UNDER tip--he just won't tip his usually 20-25%)
I'd say about 90% of the time when we go somewhere, we definitely get a few buy backs, so I know it can be a practice done widely (in mostly non-chain restaurants). But if we don't get the buy back--I don't get mad...just my friend does.
Sooooo....do you expect a buyback or two when out drinking and if so, if you don't get it are you annoyed?

Re: Question for the bar drinkers....buy backs
I think you have a better shot if you pay and TIP per round...let them know you're a good tipper and you're more likely to get buy backs. Also, going to the same place frequently helps too.
But, no I don't expect buy backs nor do I get angry if we don't get them.

We do the same thing and have found the same thing - some people will buy you back, others won't.
We probably end up tipping about the same in the end but, DH does get a little annoyed if we don't get a round bought back and it might be awhile before we go back to that establishment again.

Re: Question for the bar drinkers....buy backs
If it's a chain I don't expect a buy back. I hate chain bars so I would never even be in one but if it is a independent bar and we have purchased a few rounds and left a good tip each time then yes I do expect a buy back. My dh works in a bar a few nights a week so he gets enraged if he doesn't get proper service .
I also hate bars that charge the designated driver for seltzer or soda!! I was the dd one night and was out with 4 other people. These four guys spent a fortune on drinks at the end of the night when we got our bill they had a charge of over $20 for seltzer. We will never go back there again!

exactly. if you tip at the end, the Bartender doesn't know how you tip, and will be less inclined to buy back your group.
that, and show your boobs. it always works for me...even with the chicks.
so, your friends should either blame you, or pimp you out!

hhaha--i definitely show off the girls at the bar.
we do tend to frequent the same places -- and get more buy backs there than other locations.
he's always super friendly with the bartender and stuff, so i guess he figures that this will be a sign to them that he's a "good customer"
he likes to have a tab vs. paying for each one...although i'm not sure why.

even when we tab, I tip per drink. I don't put tips on my cc so it works out.
being a good customer to the bar is not necessarily being a good tipper to the tender, kwim??
anyway, it's worth a shot next time.

Re: Question for the bar drinkers....buy backs
I agree with the previous posters. I was a bartender for many years and I was always more inclined to buy back a round for a group that had already tipped me than for ones that hadn't.
Alot of bars have buy back policies where the bartender only gets a certain amount of money or drinks she can give back a night. Whenever I was bartending I always tried to buy back a round or two and when I go out I do tend to expect at least one buy back.

ITA! And I never expect them here in MD or DC. I have ONLY seen this done in NYC from my experience. So to me it is a treat and really unexpected.

With a tab his wife can't monitor how much money is being spent instead the surprise bill comes at the end of the night and uhhh ohh it's too late. I once went out with two guys that spent over $90 on margharittas in 1 hour. If their wives knew they were $10 each you bet they would have only had 1 each.

Re: Question for the bar drinkers....buy backs
I was so used to buy backs at our local watering hole in NY that when I moved to NC and realized that they do NOT do buy backs (no matter how much you drink), i was annoyed

As a bartender, for every 2 drinks someone has, I always buy the 3rd.. But that's just me..

Re: Question for the bar drinkers....buy backs
I never expect it per say, but when you buy from the same bartenter and pay for each round of drinks each time and she/he gets tipped each time, eventually I think you should get a buy back.
But, when you run a tab, I never think that is common pratice.

Re: Question for the bar drinkers....buy backs
Many bars have very strict rules regarding buybacks from the management. In some cases a bartender has to get management approval for a buyback. And in the world of computerized touch-screen cash registers, every transaction has to be documented (even buybacks).
I know for a fact these new registers have "buyback" buttons on them. Again some places can be very strict about this.
The bartender may simply not be allowed to buyback, so I wouldn't be so quick to put blame on the bartender.
