Question for non-teachers regarding vacation time

I am writing a piece for an education blog (an essay/opinion piece, nothing I am going to research heavily) and I have a question for non-teachers. I am not planning to quote anyone; I am working under the assumption that others don't take work home over vacations, but I always have, and dealt with emails from kids and parents, etc. Just want to make sure that my assumption is correct. I know it's a big generalization.

So...When you are on vacation, are you expected to do work-related things, and are you expected to be available via phone/email, etc.?

Re: Question for non-teachers regarding vacation time

Yes- both me and my boyfriend have to do work over vacations

In fact the only person at the pool on our mexican vacation not "working" (answering calls and emails) was a waiter back home

Nope, when we are on holiday we have complete handovers and we are non-contactable. But it is our responsibility to make sure handovers are done, and all our work is completed. But when I am on holiday, I do not work at all.

Re: Question for non-teachers regarding vacation time

Emergencies only. We had a huge deadline while I was away this Christmas and I was expecting SEVERAL calls but luckly I received none.

Yep, on-call 24/7. Vacations where I can't (or say I can't) be reached via phone, I have to communicate via email.

At jobs in the past - yes. I actually had a boss track me down and call me in Italy one year!

I will answer for my DH, since as a former teacher I was like you and now as a SAHM...well, the work never ends. Chat Icon

Yes, my DH always needs to be available. He is an attorney in private practice as well as a business owner (as well as an adjunct professor). When we first started dating, his practice was a lot larger than it is now and the calls from clients at all times of the day plus weekends would INFURIATE me. I remember even on our Italian honeymoon, he spent a good portion of time in Sorrento working with a particular client/situation. It's a bit better now that he deals with a lot less clients...but his business is quite busy so...

His weekends aren't affected as much anymore since the company is closed then. However...vacations? Ha! In the 10 years we've been together, aside from our honeymoon and two other times, he's not taken a solid block of a week off anyway!

Re: Question for non-teachers regarding vacation time

yes but only emergencies.

I usually give my boss the names and numbers of hotels I'm staying at in case they need to reach me.

Nobody has ever called but I think it makes them feel a little more comfortable if I'll be gone more than a week.

Re: Question for non-teachers regarding vacation time

My boss would like me to be available, but I refuse to do so. The purpose of a vacation is to have time off from work, not to have a different place to do it. Both my bosses kept asking me where I was going for my honeymoon, so I told them Aruba. When I returned, they asked me how Aruba was and I told them I don't know because I was on Antigua. Oops.

I do as much as possible before I leave, leave detailed instructions on what to do should something happen while I'm away. I actually made up a binder with all of my work details in it. My counterpoint in Oregon and I cross-trained each other so we always have back up. I can't help it if my American boss is computer-phobic and my Japanese boss is ueber-anal.

My vacation time or planned day off is my time, not company time.

Re: Question for non-teachers regarding vacation time

well it depends, i am not a manager but if my boss is off and I happen to be off then yes i have to check everything because I started doing it on my own (bad) but it shows that i care.

I think if your going away - not staying at home then i do not answer my emails and that is respected.

Re: Question for non-teachers regarding vacation time

been there, done that and never again.

I learned big time that vacation time is given for a reason...to take a break from the office.

No one is that important that taking time off from the office will make a difference, unless you are the only employee.

Re: Question for non-teachers regarding vacation time

I am not required to be available but depending on the circumstances I sometimes am.

If I am out for a few days and am staying local, I make myself available by phone and will check my email. If I'm away on a full-blown vacation, then no, not at all.

Re: Question for non-teachers regarding vacation time

I think it depends on your job and level of responsibility. Most people I know who are beyond entry level in a business environment, have a portion of work they have to do while on vacation.

Re: Question for non-teachers regarding vacation time

Back when I was working there were times where I had to bring work home to do over vacation time, but not every time.

DH is required to be reachable 24/7 and must check his blackberry for emails at least once an hour during business hours and a few times a night after business hours on weekends and vacation days. It's very annoying, but he works in a fast paced industry that can literally change from minute to minute. And he's well compensated, so we really can't complain that much.

Re: Question for non-teachers regarding vacation time

I am not usually contacted but higher level people are & I occassionaly opt to do something during vacation, b/c I need to so it myself & that time & I would rather do the one thing as opposed to not take the day off.

My FIL was contacted all the time . . .late at night, in Italy, on his way to the hospital for surgery. . . Chat Icon

Re: Question for non-teachers regarding vacation time

It varied, but was largely dependent upon my boss's expectations. I have had two bosses who expected me to be available to answer their calls when I was on vacation.

One boss only expected this when I was taking a day off, not a full vacation, but that's b/c I worked in the securities industry and was required by industry regulations to take two solid weeks off with no contact at work. It was designed to prevent fraud and insider trading, I think.

Yes. I am available via email (BlackBerry connected to work). They only call me with emergancies.
DH is the complete opposite. When he is away he is actually away.

Re: Question for non-teachers regarding vacation time

Yes, I am absolutely expected to be available via email/phone and do work-related things while I am on vacation. However, it is something I knew coming into this job and the same would be expected of me if I worked for another employer but with a similar job.

Re: Question for non-teachers regarding vacation time

Yes -- I am a lawyer and even if I am on vacation I am still expected to at least be accessible via phone and email. Sometimes I have to take of small work relating things while on vacation (especially if I am the only person who has knowledge about that client, or by the time I was done explaining what needed to be done to another attorney I could have just done it myself!).

Re: Question for non-teachers regarding vacation time

Always have, as does DH and both of my parents. We were in the Caribbean on the beach checking our work email!

I actually think more corporate jobs are expected to work during vacations than teachers.

Re: Question for non-teachers regarding vacation time

I work in education but I will answer for my DH. NO he does not. He works in finance/annuities bonds etc.

If we are in say Florida he might take a call here or there--but if we are in Mexico, abroad--nope he can't be reached

eta: bc of a response I read from PP--my DH is above entry level. I knw every position is different but there are many people above entry level that do not need to check in Chat Icon
