Question for middle school teachers....

Okay. So theres a family dilemma that caused my little 13 year old cousin to move from Long Island to Brooklyn (temperarily - permanent) - not sure about it.. right now everything is very hectic. Since we dont know how long this is going to last, right now shes not in school. Horrible that she has to get involvedChat Icon . Is it possible for me to enroll her in a school in Brooklyn to finish off the year (8th grade) or should she just wait it out and see what happens? I hate that shes missing school right now, but my sister in law is going through some personal issues with her husband and she cant even think straight right now.

What are your suggestions???

The LAW requires that she attend school! You can register if your sister in law signs papers saying that you are the temporary guardian and you can register her in school.

I am so sorry your SIL is going through some personal issues but her child should not continue to suffer for it. If she does not finish 8th grade then she might be held back and it's not fair for this poor girl to have to repeat a grade because of other things outside of her control. Please try and get your SIL to sign papers ASAP for her daughters sake!

I hope things get better.

CPS can go after her if her child is not enrolled in school.

Yes, I know. I just spoke to her.. I'm not going to be the legal guardian. She is in Brooklyn with her (I may have worded that wrong in the original post.) She is going to enroll her into a Brooklyn JHS to finish the school year. My question really is... If things do work out.. lets say within a month, would she be able to go back to her regular school in Hempstead? I wouldn't think it would be healthy for a child to be jumping from school to school.

She needs to enroll her ASAP, before the authorities get involved.

Yes even though it's not in the child's best interest she can bring her back to the other school. I have a child right now that is on his 4th school this year because the mother likes to move around a lot. Very sad for the child. He is in 7th grade and has a lot of issues from all of this 'moving'

I have that situation all the time with children moving back and forth. I would rather see a child in school and bounced around a little, then not in school at all.

Last year I had a 7th grader who was in her 14th school - it just happens sometimes.

She needs to legally be enrolled in school. CPS will get involved because this will then be considered NEGLECT. Do the right thing!!!

Good luck!

Yes I know she needs to be legally involved in school. Of course I want my sister in law to do the right thing. Thats why I posted on this board. Last thing she (or I ) would want is to neglect her daughter. The whole reasoning for this question is whether or not it is advisable to have her bounce from school to school.

Thank you. Will do. She went today to enroll her into JHS - even if its temporary. She has an appointment to speak with one of the school advisors today at noon.
